Pakistan’s Coaching Staff, Including Aaqib Javed, Set to Be Sacked Post India Loss

Pakistan's loss to India in the ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025 held in Dubai has not been well received by the Pakistan Cricket Board. The leadership is poised to dismiss interim head coach Aaqib Javed along with the rest of the coaching staff.
In a Group A match, India decisively defeated their long-standing rivals Pakistan by six wickets, prompting criticism from several former Pakistani cricketers regarding the current team's quality.
Prominent figures such as Shoaib Akhtar, Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Hafeez, Salman Butt, Wasim Akram, and Waqar Younis have all pointed out the limited options available in the squad and the overly defensive strategy employed during the Champions Trophy.
As reported by the news agency PTI, Aaqib Javed is expected to be relieved of his responsibilities as interim head coach following the conclusion of the Champions Trophy.
“There is clearly a backlash regarding the team’s performance in the tournament. The Board has yet to make a decision on whether to appoint separate head coaches for red and white ball formats, but it is certain that the current support staff will undergo significant changes after the disappointing results in the Champions Trophy,” a source informed PTI.
“However, given the Board's frequent changes in coaches and selectors over the past year, finding suitable candidates for these roles may prove to be a challenge,” the source added.
PCB to look at former players for the head coach job
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is now prepared to consider former players for the position of head coach. Following the resignation of Gary Kirsten, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi appointed Aaqib as the interim head coach for the white-ball team.
Subsequently, Aaqib was also tasked with leading the Test team after Jason Gillespie stepped down from his role as the red-ball coach.
According to a source, "Given the circumstances surrounding the resignations of Kirsten and Gillespie, the PCB is unlikely to have a wide selection of foreign coaches available, making it probable that they will turn to former players for this role."
After their defeat to India in the Champions Trophy, the defending champions, Pakistan, find themselves on the brink of elimination from the eight-team tournament.
For Pakistan to remain in contention, Mohammad Rizwan and his teammates require Bangladesh to secure a victory over New Zealand. Additionally, Pakistan must defeat Bangladesh and rely on India to win against New Zealand on March 2.
In their matches against New Zealand and India, Pakistan's performance was lackluster, and their approach has drawn significant criticism. Key players such as Babar Azam, Rizwan, Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, and Naseem Shah have faced scrutiny for their inability to perform at critical moments.
