Pakistan Women’s Cricket Opener Reiterates: “No Interest in Playing in India” Amid World Cup Row

Pakistan has secured their spot for the upcoming ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, thanks to a remarkable showing in the recently concluded Qualifier. Pakistan’s entry also guarantees that the tournament will be held in a hybrid format, as their matches against India will occur at a neutral location. Currently placed ninth in the ODI team rankings, Pakistan accomplished five wins in five matches, including victories against higher-ranked opponents West Indies (sixth) and Bangladesh (eighth). Their qualification has raised controversy since India is expected to host the 2025 Women’s World Cup later this year. The PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi has already mentioned that they will not be traveling to the host country.

Moreover, Pakistan opener Gull Feroza, who played in three matches during the Qualifier as an opener, also affirmed her team’s stance on competing in India.

Feroza Gull states, 'We are not in competition in India. '

Speaking to PakPassion, she was inquired about the uncertainty regarding where Pakistan will compete in the tournament.

“We understand that we will compete in Asian conditions and not in India. This is evident. We are also not interested in playing in India,” she stated.

“Thus, wherever it is held - hopefully in Sri Lanka or Dubai - those conditions resemble those found in Asia. The Qualifiers were conducted at home, and the staff prepared surfaces accordingly. Regardless of where the World Cup matches occur, the conditions will mimic those we experience at home. Therefore, our preparation will align with that, and we are prepared for it,” she continued.

Particularly after the Pahalgam terrorist attack this month, diplomatic ties between India and Pakistan have suffered an additional blow. Furthermore, Feroza’s statement followed the Pahalgam terrorist attack. The Resistance Front, a splinter group of Lashkar-e-Taiba, has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Neeraj Chopra also found himself in a controversy. The gold medallist from the Tokyo Olympics had extended an invitation to the reigning Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem (from Pakistan) for his private tournament NC Classic. The invitation was issued prior to the attack. After the attack, Chopra faced abuse and criticism from fans on social media. In the meantime, Nadeem also declined the invitation, citing other obligations.

The Indian men’s team also did not travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy this year, and their matches, including the final, were held in Dubai.
