More than 100 police officers from Pakistan's Punjab Police were dismissed after refusing to fulfil their security duties during the Champions Trophy 2025, as reported by the news agency PTI. These officers, who were part of various divisions within the police force, faced termination following their noncompliance with assigned responsibilities. This incident occurred shortly after the Pakistan Intelligence Bureau issued a high alert regarding security threats to foreign nationals attending the tournament.
The officers were reportedly absent from their posts on multiple occasions or outright declined to carry out their duties during the ICC tournament, which marks Pakistan's first participation since 1996.
A Punjab Police official informed PTI that the officers were tasked with ensuring the safety of teams travelling between Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore and their designated hotels, yet many either failed to show up or refused to engage in their duties. The Inspector General of Police for Punjab, Usman Anwar, has taken serious notice of the situation and has mandated strict disciplinary measures against the involved personnel, emphasizing that there is no tolerance for negligence in securing international events.
While the specific reasons for the officers' refusal to perform their duties have not been officially disclosed, local media reports indicate that the extended hours of duty may have contributed to their decision.
The Pakistan cricket team has already exited the Champions Trophy after suffering defeats to New Zealand and India.
In a related development, Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar has refuted claims of a potential terror threat to the tournament. In an interview with Geo News, he stated, “I want to emphasize that Pakistan is successfully and peacefully hosting the ICC Champions Trophy. Our stadiums are filled with fans from around the globe, and the atmosphere is celebratory as people enjoy the spirit of cricket.”
