Salman Ali Agha (134) and Mohammad Rizwan (122*) delivered an outstanding performance as Pakistan successfully pursued their highest total in ODI history, securing a place in the tri-series final against South Africa on Wednesday. In Karachi, Pakistan chased down a formidable target of 353 runs, significantly aided by the remarkable 260-run partnership for the fourth wicket between Rizwan and Agha.

The innings commenced with a solid foundation laid by Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman, who took full advantage of the powerplay, surpassing 50 runs within the first six overs. Their aggressive approach kept the required run rate manageable, despite South Africa's response, which saw them claim three quick wickets before the 11-over mark. Nevertheless, the strong start allowed Pakistan to regroup, with Rizwan and Agha capitalizing on the opportunity.

The duo approached the chase with a strategic mindset, ensuring a steady flow of runs while gradually settling into their innings. Rizwan served as the anchor, accumulating runs with accuracy, while Agha provided the explosive element. Once established, both batsmen unleashed a variety of strokes, effortlessly finding the boundary. Their substantial 260-run partnership overwhelmed the South African bowlers, who struggled to make breakthroughs despite numerous attempts.

Ngidi eventually broke the partnership, but by that time, the damage had already been inflicted. Pakistan had navigated through the most challenging phase of the chase, and with the target well within their grasp, they completed a commanding run chase, leaving South Africa without any solutions.

A record run-chase

Pakistan set a new record for the highest successful run chase on Wednesday, surpassing their previous best of 349 runs achieved against Australia three years prior.

Furthermore, Pakistan has distinguished itself as the sole team to have successfully chased a target exceeding 350 runs in One Day Internationals over the last five years.

This victory has positioned Pakistan for the tri-series final against New Zealand, who had previously triumphed over the hosts in the series' opening match. The final will serve as the last encounter for both teams before they participate in the Champions Trophy, commencing in Pakistan on February 19.
