Pakistan has been going through a tough time in international cricket, highlighted by their disappointing exit in the group stage of the 2025 Champions Trophy. With the team and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) facing heavy criticism, it seems a prominent player is gearing up to announce his retirement from ODI cricket.

According to a report from Samaa TV on Wednesday, opener Fakhar Zaman is planning to hang up his ODI boots. Sources close to the media outlet revealed that he had conversations about this with some senior teammates during the Champions Trophy, and an official announcement is expected soon.

"Champions Trophy will be my last ICC tournament. I want to take a break from ODI cricket," Zaman reportedly mentioned.

The report indicated that his decision stems from ongoing health struggles, particularly his battle with hyperthyroidism. Additionally, the 34-year-old was sidelined from the tournament after getting injured in the opening match against New Zealand at the National Stadium in Karachi. He picked up the injury while fielding and was ruled out of the tournament shortly after. It’s expected that he’ll be out for at least three months.

The report also noted that Zaman has become frustrated with Pakistan's selection policies regarding No-Objection Certificates (NOCs) for playing in overseas leagues. As a result, he may be considering relocating abroad with his family.

Fakhar has played 86 ODIs for Pakistan, amassing 3,651 runs at an impressive average of 46.21. One of his standout performances was during the 2017 Champions Trophy final at the Oval, where he scored a brilliant century against India, leading Pakistan to their first title.

Pakistan is out of the Champions Trophy

The defending champions had a rough start in Group A, dropping both of their opening matches and facing a tough first-round exit in the Champions Trophy. They fell to New Zealand by 60 runs and then lost to India by six wickets on Sunday in Dubai. Their elimination was confirmed on Monday when the Black Caps took down Bangladesh in Rawalpindi.

Pakistan is set to play their last match against Bangladesh on Thursday at the Rawalpindi Cricket Ground.
