Pakistan Cricket Board Dismisses Financial Loss Reports, Claims ₹3 Billion Earnings from Champions Trophy

On Thursday, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) refuted claims from Indian media that it faced an 85 percent loss after investing INR 869 crore in the recently held Champions Trophy, which took place from February 19 to March 9. PCB spokesperson Aamir Mir and Chief Financial Officer Javed Murtaza emphasized that this ICC tournament, which marked the return of international cricket to Pakistan after 29 years, actually led to a significant increase in the board's revenue.

During a press conference, the PCB officials dismissed the allegations regarding financial losses from hosting the Champions Trophy, revealing that they generated ₹3 billion from the event.

"All tournament expenses were covered by the ICC," Mir explained. "The PCB made money through ticket sales and gate receipts, and after the audit, we anticipate an additional ₹3 billion from the ICC."

Mir noted that while the board initially aimed to earn ₹2 billion from the Champions Trophy, they exceeded that target during the tournament, which saw India clinch the title by defeating New Zealand in the final held in Dubai.

He also praised board chairman Mohsin Naqvi for the improved financial results, highlighting that they earned 40 percent more than the previous fiscal year.

"Thanks to this financial success, the PCB is now among the top three wealthiest cricket boards globally," Mir stated. "The board has also paid ₹40 million in taxes."

PCB responds to rumors about compensation for local players and the ICC's explanation

Indian media reported that local players faced the fallout from a 'financial misadventure,' resulting in a 90 percent cut to their match fees. However, Mir confirmed that Naqvi has since overturned the salary cut decision.

Officials also mentioned they are still waiting for clarification from the ICC about their board official being overlooked during the Champions Trophy closing ceremony in Dubai.
