With Neeraj Chopra's NC Classic Javelin event set for May 24, Paris Olympics gold medallist Arshad Nadeem was anticipated to be a major attraction. However, to the disappointment of supporters, Nadeem has recently disclosed that he has turned down the invitation, as it coincides with his training schedule for the Asian Athletics Championship.
As reported by PTI, Nadeem appreciates the invitation from Neeraj but is busy with his preparation for the upcoming Asian Championship, which is slated to take place from May 27-31. Nadeem's choice also follows the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
Arshad Nadeem rejects Neeraj Chopra's invitation
“The (NC) Classic event is scheduled for May 20 (May 24), while I will be departing for Korea on May 22 for the Asian Athletics Championship,” he stated.
Previously, Chopra had disclosed, “I have extended an invitation to Arshad, and he mentioned he will respond to me after conferring with his coach. Thus far, he has not yet confirmed his participation. ”
Nadeem holds the title of reigning Olympic and CWG champion, and he is also the current silver medallist of the World Athletics Championship. His throw of 92. 97 meters at the Paris Olympics constitutes both an Olympic and Asian record, and it ranks as the sixth longest throw in the history of the sport.
The Neeraj Chopra Classic Javelin event will feature competitors like Anderson Peters and Thomas Rohler, both of whom have confirmed their participation. Peters is a two-time world champion hailing from Grenada, while Rohler is the gold medallist from the 2016 Olympics.
World Athletics has awarded the event a Category A status, and the location has been changed from Panchkula to Bengaluru, due to issues regarding lighting and live broadcasting.
“I preferred to hold the event in Panchkula, but there are specific problems concerning the stadium’s lighting (floodlight). World Athletics mandates a brightness of 600 lux (a unit of light intensity) for international telecasts, which is lacking (in Panchkula), and installation will require time,” Chopra clarified.
“Therefore, we have opted to relocate the event to Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru this year. I believe the evening conditions in Bengaluru will be ideal for the event, benefiting both the athletes and the spectators,” he added.
