David Miller-led Paarl Royals have been exceptional in the ongoing SA20, finishing with an unbeaten five-game home record at Boland Park. This marks the first time any team has gone through the league phase without losing a match at home.

The Royals secured a thrilling six-wicket victory over the Durban Super Giants, who have now been eliminated from the competition.

South Africa’s rising stars, Luhan-dre Pretorius and Kwena Maphaka, played key roles in maintaining the Royals’ dominance at the top of the SA20 standings. With the win, the Royals moved to 28 points.

Maphaka starred with the ball, delivering his best performance yet, taking 2/22 to restrict Durban to 143/7. Pretorius then hit 43 off 29 balls to guide the Royals to a successful run chase.

Pretorius also reclaimed the top spot as the season’s highest run-scorer, surpassing his opening partner Joe Root, who was dismissed for a duck. Pretorius is now the first player to exceed 300 runs in Season 3.

The Royals have unearthed some promising new talent, with Rubin Hermann continuing his dream debut season with a solid 59 off 51 balls. Hermann showcased his innovation, particularly against spinners, with clever sweeps and reverse sweeps.

In the end, it was all-rounder Dayyaan Galiem who struck the winning six with just two balls remaining, taking the Royals over the line. The team made a strategic change to their bowling lineup, bringing in Galiem and Maphaka, after previously playing five spinners.

What did Mphaka have to say?

Maphaka produced his best performance of the competition so far, making an impact both at the start and the death overs. He delivered a stunning delivery that shattered Brandon King’s defence early on, before deceiving Heinrich Klaasen with a well-executed slower ball.

"I was really eager to deliver a strong performance. I hadn’t been performing as well as I’d hoped, so I wanted to put in a good effort for the team," Maphaka shared.

"I’ve bowled to him (Klaasen) several times in the nets. The slower ball seemed to work well. I’ve been practising it since I was 12, so I have it down pretty well. I was happy to see it come off in the match," he added.
