The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is encountering significant backlash following the cancellation of the Afghanistan vs Australia Champions Trophy 2025 match at the recently upgraded Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Despite an ambitious renovation project costing ₹18 billion, the stadium's drainage system proved inadequate, leaving the outfield unplayable even after the rain had ceased.

Afghanistan had set a challenging target of 273 runs before Australia’s innings was halted at 12.5 overs due to ongoing rain. Controversy arose when play could not resume despite the skies clearing, highlighting the venue's insufficient drainage capabilities. Puddles accumulated across the outfield, forcing the umpires to abandon the match, which has led to widespread criticism from both experts and fans.

The criticism has escalated further with the emergence of videos depicting leaking ceilings in the stadium's restrooms. Footage shared by the Pakistani news outlet Tribune reveals water dripping from the restroom ceilings, raising concerns about the hurried nature of the renovation work.

Additionally, fans have shared videos showing water accumulation in the stands, underscoring the substandard quality of the construction in a project that was reportedly completed in a mere 117 days.

Pakistan has encountered several setbacks in finalizing the renovations of its stadiums in preparation for the Champions Trophy. The Gaddafi Stadium, recognized as one of the nation's foremost cricket venues, was intended to exemplify Pakistan's hosting prowess.

However, the shortcomings in infrastructure have resulted in a situation of embarrassment, raising concerns regarding the Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) planning and implementation. This incident marks the third match in the Champions Trophy that has been cancelled due to rain, following two previous abandoned matches in Rawalpindi.

Criticism over preparations

Former Indian all-rounder Madan Lal expressed his candid views on the matter, describing the situation as a "poor representation of Pakistan." He highlighted the misaligned priorities evident in the renovation efforts.

"This is not favourable for Pakistan. I observed yesterday's match and their approach to removing the water… There was significant criticism," he stated during an interview with ANI.

As more Champions Trophy matches are scheduled to occur in Pakistan, the issue of venue readiness has emerged as a critical concern. A semi-final is set to be hosted in Pakistan, along with a potential final, contingent upon India's qualification for the championship match.
