The Pakistan Cricket Board has faced criticism from former national team players and analysts. Recently, ex-Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez addressed the issue of political interference within the PCB, making significant revelations.
During a Q&A session on X, Hafeez discussed various challenges impacting cricket in Pakistan. When a fan inquired about the role of politics in the PCB's decision-making, he stated, “The appointment of the PCB chairman is always influenced by political affiliations… I cannot speak for others.”
As a former team director, Hafeez also clarified his current absence from coaching positions within the organization, remarking, “I am currently not involved, and I am enjoying it.”
It was not unexpected that he was questioned about the controversial inclusion of veterans Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan in the national squad. Supporting the duo, he commented, “Babar and Rizwan are exceptional players who have been crucial in securing victories for Pakistan. They simply need to enhance their strategies and skills to make a greater impact. They possess the talent to achieve this.”
Additionally, a journalist recently accused the PCB of financial misconduct. On Samaa TV, Shahid Hashmi exposed troubling details, revealing that the curator of Rawalpindi Stadium had to sell his personal motorcycle for ground upkeep. He also alleged that the curator of the Karachi stadium had to solicit donations for its maintenance.
Shahid Afridi echoes similar sentiments
The PCB has faced criticism from the renowned cricketer Shahid Afridi.
In a statement to the media, the former athlete remarked, “If I had the power, I would be the chairman of the PCB today. In our era, the national team boasted numerous match-winners, but that is not the case now.”
Addressing the development of cricket at the grassroots level in Pakistan, he stated, “Players in the Under-16, 17, and 19 teams require proper coaching. We need skilled individuals at the foundational levels to effectively train these athletes.”
Afridi echoed a sentiment similar to that of Hafeez, asserting, “Entrusting domestic cricket to a bureaucrat will lead to a lack of understanding. Each PCB chairman typically assumes their role for political reasons. Merely changing personnel will not reform the system.”
