New Zealand cricketer Rachin Ravindra experienced an unfortunate injury on Saturday during the inaugural ODI of the tri-series against Pakistan, resulting in a laceration to his forehead that caused significant bleeding. He was promptly taken off the field for medical attention. While New Zealand Cricket reported that he was "otherwise well," the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) faced criticism on social media, with users urging the International Cricket Council (ICC) to reconsider Pakistan's role as the host for the Champions Trophy.
The incident occurred in the 37th over of Pakistan's innings when Ravindra attempted to catch a ball hit by Khushdil Shah, who slog-swept Michael Bracewell towards deep square leg. Unfortunately, Ravindra lost sight of the ball due to the floodlights, resulting in it striking him in the face.
After the impact, Ravindra appeared momentarily disoriented, staring at the ground as blood trickled down his face, which left the crowd in shocked silence. The medical team, along with the Pakistan team doctor, quickly attended to him on the field. He lay down for a few moments before being escorted off with his face covered by a towel, receiving a warm round of applause from the spectators at Gaddafi Stadium.
In the aftermath of the incident, concerns were raised on social media regarding Pakistan's suitability as a host for the Champions Trophy, with the PCB being held accountable for the injury.
Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif, during a discussion on Caught Behind, highlighted that the primary issue stemmed from the use of LED lights at the venue. He noted, "The glow is more in such lights. Hence, when the ball travels flat, you are often unable to see it."
Pakistan's use of poor-quality Chinese lighting at Gaddafi Stadium has led to an injury for New Zealand's Rachin Ravindra. This is unacceptable, especially with the ICC Champions Trophy being hosted.
