Mullanpur: This season of the IPL has showcased numerous captivating cricketers with remarkable stories.

On Tuesday, Priyansh Arya joined this impressive roster by delivering a spectacular performance, scoring 103 runs off just 42 balls, which secured an 18-run victory for Punjab Kings (PBKS) against a resilient Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at their home ground. This defeat marked CSK's fourth loss in five matches, further complicating their position in the points table.

With Arya's contribution, PBKS posted a total of 219/6 after opting to bat first, with Shashank Singh also making a significant impact by scoring an unbeaten 52 runs off 36 balls. CSK struggled with their batting, finishing at 201/5.

Devon Conway provided a glimmer of hope for CSK with a commendable 69 runs off 49 balls. Shivam Dube added 42 runs from 27 balls but lacked adequate support from his teammates. Although MS Dhoni energized the crowd with three sixes in his quickfire 27 runs off 12 balls, the team's chase faltered after Conway was forced to retire in the 18th over, leaving them needing 49 runs from the final 13 balls. With 28 runs required in the last over, CSK lost Dhoni on the first ball, and no miraculous comeback ensued.

The spotlight was on Arya, a player from West Delhi, who is making his IPL debut based on his impressive performance in the recent Delhi Premier League (DPL). He commenced his innings with a six off the very first ball. At just 24 years old and playing in only his fourth IPL match, Arya exhibited the poise of a seasoned player, even after losing his opening partner Prabhsimran Singh, as well as key players like skipper Shreyas Iyer, Marcus Stoinis, in-form Nehal Wadhera, and Glenn Maxwell within the first eight overs.

Having previously scored a brisk 47 runs against Gujarat Titans in his IPL debut, Arya was relentless against CSK. In the 13th over, Matheesha Pathirana conceded 22 runs, with Arya striking three sixes, and it was during this over that he reached his century in just 39 balls.

This marked the second quickest century by an Indian in the IPL, following Yusuf Pathan’s remarkable 37-ball achievement for the Rajasthan Royals against the Mumbai Indians in 2010. Additionally, it stands as the fastest IPL century recorded by an uncapped player.

Acquired by PBKS for 3.8 crore during the November auction, the left-handed batsman partnered with Shashank to accumulate 71 runs. He hit nine sixes and seven fours before being dismissed by Afghan spinner Noor Ahmad. Marco Jansen contributed with a brisk 34 runs off 19 balls, aiding in the late surge of runs.

“I tend not to show much emotion, but I am feeling quite pleased. After the previous match, Shreyas advised me to trust my strengths and play my natural game. I aim to express myself and not feel constrained,” Arya remarked.
