Chennai Super Kings commenced their IPL 2025 season with a commanding performance, securing a four-wicket victory against Mumbai Indians in their opening match on Sunday. In pursuit of 156 runs, CSK successfully achieved a score of 158/6 in 19.1 overs, with opener Rachin Ravindra hitting the decisive six.
Afghan spinner Noor Ahmad was named Player of the Match, delivering an impressive performance with figures of 4/18 over four overs. Noor was acquired by CSK during the IPL 2025 auction in Jeddah for ₹10 crores, making him the franchise's most expensive purchase in the auction.
In his post-match comments, Noor conveyed his eagerness to excel for CSK this season and expressed gratitude towards MS Dhoni. “Playing in the IPL is a special experience. I am pleased with the team's success and my contribution. My focus was on placing the ball accurately, and taking Surya's wicket was significant. The stumping by MSD was extraordinary. It’s a tremendous advantage to have someone like Mahi bhai behind the stumps,” he remarked.
During the chase, Rachin Ravindra emerged as CSK’s standout player, remaining not out with a score of 65 runs off 45 balls. Additionally, opener Ruturaj Gaikwad contributed with a half-century, scoring 53 runs off 26 balls. For MI, Vignesh Puthur was the standout bowler, claiming three wickets.
MI experienced a significant batting collapse in their first innings, managing to post only 155/9. Alongside Noor, Khaleel Ahmed also excelled against MI, taking three wickets.
CSK captain Gaikwad, reflecting on the match, stated, “I am pleased to secure a win, though I would have preferred a more polished performance. That’s the nature of the game. The decision to bat at three was made for the team's balance, and I am glad to adapt my position.”
“The spinners were right on point and right after the auction, one thing we were really excited about was all those three spinners bowling in tandem at Chepauk. Khaleel is experienced and Noor is an X factor and that is why we wanted him in the team and good to have Ash as well. He (Dhoni) is fitter this year and he is still looking young.”
