One Kit, One Blazing Knock! Nehal Wadhera Stuns LSG Despite Last-Minute Inclusion
3 days ago | 5 Views
Punjab Kings batter Nehal Wadhera was completely unaware that he would make his debut in the red and gold jersey during IPL 2025 on April 1 (Tuesday) against the Lucknow Super Giants at the Ekana Stadium. So confident was the left-handed player that he did not even bring along separate batting and fielding kits, a common practice among players today. Ultimately, Wadhera was called upon as an Impact Substitute in the 19th over of the LSG innings.
"I didn’t feel particularly nervous, but I wasn’t aware that I would be playing today, so I only brought one kit with me. Later, I found out that I was in the lineup," Wadhera remarked during the post-match presentation.
Entering the game at No. 4 in the 11th over of the PBKS chase, following a rapid 69 off 34 balls from Prabhsmiran Singh, Wadhera ensured that the LSG bowlers could not regain control. He struck four sixes and three fours in a dynamic performance that kept the pressure off PBKS. They successfully chased down the 172-run target in just 16.2 overs, moving up to second place in the IPL 2025 points table. This marked only the fourth occasion in 18 years of IPL history that PBKS won their first two matches of the season.
"We really needed this victory. Shreyas bhai and everyone played exceptionally well, our bowlers performed admirably, and Prabhsimran's batting was impressive as well," Wadhera added.
Wadhera credits captain Iyer, coach ponting
Wadhera formed an impressive partnership of 67 runs with Iyer (52* off 30) in a mere 31 balls, facilitating a smooth chase for PBKS. During the post-match press conference, when questioned about discussions regarding net run rate during the mid-innings break, the 24-year-old clarified that it was not part of their strategy. "No, there was no discussion about net run rate. We aimed to chase the total swiftly, especially since Prabh provided us with a strong start," he stated.
Having been part of the Mumbai Indians setup last year, Wadhera acknowledged the continuous support from captain Shreyas Iyer while batting.
"When I stepped onto the field, my intention was to play my shots and seize opportunities. Shreyas has been an excellent captain, encouraging me to play my natural game and adapt to the flow of the match. The experience I have gained over the past two years has prepared me to showcase my skills here with Punjab. That’s how I have been getting ready."
He also expressed gratitude towards head coach Ricky Ponting, describing him as the finest coach he has ever had. "He (Ricky Ponting) is among the best coaches I have worked with; I have never heard a negative comment from him. He consistently shares positive feedback, and such encouragement from a coach significantly enhances your confidence."
