On this date in 2004, the Sydney Cricket Ground hosted a remarkable One Day International (ODI) match in the VB Series, where India competed against Australia. Yuvraj Singh and VVS Laxman delivered outstanding performances, each scoring impressive centuries. However, Australia emerged victorious in a nail-biting finish, winning by two wickets with only one ball left, utilizing the Duckworth-Lewis method.

Yuvraj and Laxman's partnership

Choosing to bat first, India encountered an early challenge with the dismissal of captain Sourav Ganguly for just 1 run. However, VVS Laxman and Parthiv Patel stabilized the innings, contributing 62 runs for the second wicket. After Patel was dismissed for 28 and Rahul Dravid followed shortly after for 12, Yuvraj Singh joined Laxman at the crease. Together, they forged a remarkable partnership of 213 runs for the fourth wicket, establishing a new record for India against Australia in One Day Internationals.

Yuvraj Singh delivered an impressive performance, amassing 139 runs from 122 balls, which featured 16 fours and two sixes. This marked his first century on Australian soil and his second overall in ODIs. Meanwhile, VVS Laxman provided consistent support, finishing unbeaten on 106 runs from 130 balls, including five boundaries. Their collaboration enabled India to reach a formidable total of 296 for 4 in their allotted 50 overs.

Gilchrist leads the run-chase

In response to the situation, Australia was assigned a revised target of 225 runs to be achieved within 34 overs due to a rain delay. Adam Gilchrist led the batting effort with an impressive 95 runs off 72 deliveries, establishing a strong base for the home team. Although Australia experienced regular wicket losses, they successfully reached the target, concluding their innings at 225 for 8 in 33.5 overs, thereby securing a two-wicket victory with just one ball remaining.

This match marked the seventh encounter of the VB Series, which featured India, Australia, and Zimbabwe. Following 12 league matches, India and Australia faced each other in two finals, both of which were won by the hosts with a score of 2-0.
