On this date in 2021, India showcased an impressive display in the fourth Test against England at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, achieving victory by an innings and 25 runs. This triumph not only clinched a 3-1 series victory but also secured India's position in the inaugural ICC World Test Championship final against New Zealand.

England chose to bat first; however, they once again faced difficulties against India's spin bowlers, being bowled out for a mere 205 runs. Ben Stokes offered some resistance with a determined 55 runs, while Dan Lawrence contributed 46. The remainder of the batting lineup struggled to withstand the consistent pressure exerted by India's spinners.

Axar Patel, who had been outstanding throughout the series, recorded impressive figures of 4 for 68. Ravichandran Ashwin also made a significant contribution with 3 for 47. Mohammed Siraj, the sole fast bowler to take wickets, claimed two vital dismissals, including that of Joe Root.

Pant and Sundar steer the ship

India encountered significant difficulties early in their innings, finding themselves at 146 for 6, largely due to the impactful bowling of Ben Stokes. Stokes dismissed several key players, including captain Virat Kohli and opener Rohit Sharma, which provided England with a sense of optimism. Nevertheless, the tide turned dramatically with a remarkable counter-attacking century from Rishabh Pant.

Pant exhibited a bold approach, scoring 101 runs off 118 deliveries, highlighted by a daring reverse scoop for six against James Anderson. His partnership with Washington Sundar was instrumental, as they combined for 113 runs for the seventh wicket. Although Pant was dismissed after reaching his century, Sundar continued to excel, remaining not out on 96. Axar Patel contributed a valuable 43 runs, enabling India to conclude their innings at 365 and secure a vital first-innings lead of 160 runs.

England's collapse

Trailing by 160 runs, England required a robust batting performance in their second innings to remain competitive in the match. Unfortunately, their batsmen faltered once more against the spin combination of Ashwin and Patel. Wickets fell consistently, with only Lawrence demonstrating resilience by scoring a commendable 50. The remainder of the English batting lineup succumbed to India's spin assault, resulting in a total of merely 135 runs.

Axar Patel concluded his remarkable series with another five-wicket haul (5 for 48), while Ashwin equalled his achievement with figures of 5 for 47, effortlessly dismantling England’s batting order. With this decisive victory, India secured a 3-1 series triumph after initially losing the first Test in Chennai. The spin attack, spearheaded by Ashwin and Patel, was instrumental in reversing the fortunes of the series.
