On this date in 1999, Anil Kumble achieved a remarkable feat in Test cricket by claiming all ten wickets in a single innings against Pakistan at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in Delhi.

During the second Test of the series, India had established a formidable target of 420 runs for Pakistan. The Pakistani openers, Saeed Anwar and Shahid Afridi began the innings with vigour, forming a century partnership. At a score of 101 without loss, Pakistan appeared to be in a dominant position.

Kumble’s game-changing spell

As the match began to slip from their grasp, Kumble rose to the occasion. He delivered an unyielding spell, systematically dismissing batsman after batsman. In a remarkable exhibition of precision and control, he claimed all ten wickets, concluding with impressive figures of 10 for 74 in 26.3 overs. This extraordinary performance shifted the momentum entirely in favour of India, culminating in a historic victory. The legspinner achieved this remarkable milestone by dismissing Pakistan's captain, Wasim Akram, prompting exuberant celebrations from both his teammates and the crowd, who were fortunate to witness a historic achievement by an Indian bowler.

Before Kumble's feat, only England's Jim Laker had reached this milestone, having taken 10 wickets in an innings against Australia in 1956. Kumble's accomplishment is regarded as one of the most celebrated moments in the annals of Indian cricket.

Furthermore, recognizing the importance of the occasion, Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin and fast bowler Javagal Srinath provided crucial support. Notably, Srinath intentionally bowled wide deliveries to create opportunities for Kumble to complete his remarkable achievement.

A defining moment in cricket

Kumble's remarkable bowling performance enabled India to achieve a 212-run victory, marking their first Test win against Pakistan in 23 encounters and breaking a drought that had persisted since the 1979-80 season. This accomplishment stands as a pivotal moment in cricket history, cherished by fans spanning multiple generations.

To this day, Kumble's 10-wicket haul is regarded as one of the most outstanding individual performances in the sport.
