Novak Djokovic conveyed a sincere message to Alexander Zverev following the latter's defeat in straight sets to Jannik Sinner during the Australian Open final on Sunday at the Rod Laver Arena. Sinner triumphed with scores of 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-3 in a match lasting two hours and 42 minutes, successfully defending his title in front of the Melbourne audience and becoming the first Italian to secure three Grand Slam titles.
In the press conference after his retirement from the semifinal against Zverev, Djokovic expressed his support for the 27-year-old in his quest for a first Grand Slam title. He stated, “I wish Sascha all the best. You know, he deserves his first slam. I'll be cheering for him. Hopefully he can get it here.” The 37-year-old reiterated his encouragement for Zverev on social media prior to the final.
However, Zverev struggled during the final as Sinner achieved a straightforward victory, not facing a single break point throughout the match. Djokovic also appeared disappointed with the outcome, sharing a supportive message for Zverev on his Instagram story. “Sasha, keep believing my friend! You have IT in you,” the world No. 7 wrote, accompanying the message with a photo of the two finalists posing for photographers on the podium after the match.
The ten-time Australian Open champion also took a moment to congratulate Sinner on his significant achievement, adding, “Auguri Jannik.”
Rafael Nadal, a former two-time champion in Melbourne, celebrated Sinner's victory as well. His Instagram story read: "Congratulazioni Jan @janniksin Impressionante!", which translates to "Congratulations Jan, impressive!"
It is noteworthy that Sinner and Nadal are the only two men in the Open Era to have successfully defended their first Grand Slam title. Nadal accomplished this in 2006 at Roland Garros. Sinner has now joined Nadal and Roger Federer as the only three male players in this century to win a Grand Slam without facing a single break point.
