India, Jan. 13 -- Novak Djokovic vs. Nishesh Basavareddy LIVE Australian Open 2025: Novak Djokovic currently leads 2-1 in the third set of their first-round match against Nishesh Basavareddy. The World No. 7 displayed complete dominance in the second set, winning it 6-3 to equalize the match.

Basavareddy appears to be limping and may take a brief pause to address his cramps.

After dropping the first set, Djokovic elevated his performance in the second. However, the 19-year-old American, of Indian descent, managed to level the score at 3-3 at one point. Unfortunately, fatigue set in for Basavareddy, allowing Djokovic to secure the second set with a score of 6-3.

In a surprising turn, the American prodigy took the first set 6-4 during their encounter at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne on Monday. Djokovic seemed out of rhythm in that initial set, which Basavareddy capitalized on effectively. Nevertheless, Djokovic has regained his composure in the second set against the promising young talent from the United States.

Basavareddy received a wildcard entry to the tournament, and a victory would be a significant achievement for him. Meanwhile, Djokovic is determined to stage a comeback as he pursues an unprecedented 11th title in Melbourne, aiming for a record-breaking 25th career Grand Slam overall.

Basavareddy's parents relocated from Andhra Pradesh to San Francisco in 1999. He was born in California and received training at Bryan Smith's coaching camp, with Rajeev Ram serving as his mentor. At the junior level, he achieved a career-high ranking of number 3. Although Basavareddy has not yet completed a full ATP Tour season, he turned professional last year after qualifying for the Next Gen ATP Finals. In 2023, he reached his first competitive final at the Fairfield Challenger and subsequently finished as a runner-up in the finals of the Challenger events in Fairfield and Charleston in 2024.

He secured his first Challenger-level title in California in October and was also a runner-up in two additional Challenger events. His second trophy was obtained in Puerto Vallarta. Recently, he faced Gael Monfils in the semi-finals of the ASB Classic, where he was defeated.

In anticipation of the match, Djokovic remarked, "To be honest, I don't know much about him. I watched him play yesterday for the first time. I believe he's competing in the semifinals of the New Zealand tournament now. I noticed that he is very quick and a highly talented player. He possesses excellent hand skills and demonstrates a dynamic playing style. His serving is effective, and he can hit his targets well. Overall, he has a very complete game."
