Novak Djokovic Reveals Meaning Behind His Son's Pikachu Bag at Australian Open
2 months ago | 5 Views
Novak Djokovic has been seen traversing Australia with his son Stefan’s Pikachu backpack, prompting observant fans to speculate that the Pokémon-themed accessory may hold deeper significance beyond its charming appearance. Pokémon aficionados noted that Pikachu is the 25th entry in the Pokédex, leading to speculation that this could symbolize Djokovic's pursuit of his 25th Grand Slam title at the Australian Open this month.
In a conversation with Serbian journalists following his first-round victory over Nishesh Basavareddy, Djokovic addressed whether this was a matter of superstition or mere coincidence.
“I find it intriguing and entertaining; I enjoyed it a lot. To be honest, it was not a deliberate choice on my part,” stated the 24-time Grand Slam champion and current world number seven.
Fans recalled Djokovic's unique celebration after his triumph at the Adelaide International tournament in 2023, where he tapped his head 22 times after defeating Sebastian Korda in the final. Djokovic had mentioned that this was not a conscious act, yet he subsequently secured his 22nd Grand Slam title in Melbourne later that month.
“Whether it was a deliberate act by a higher power, similar to the 22 taps in Adelaide… I did not do that intentionally either, at least not consciously; perhaps it was on an unconscious level,” Djokovic remarked regarding the matter.
He remains optimistic about the prospect of claiming his 25th Grand Slam trophy, regardless of the symbolism: “Whatever the significance, I hope it materializes (25th Slam).”
‘Subtle subliminal messages…’
Upon being observed at Brisbane airport with a Pikachu bag, Djokovic remarked, “All I can say is that my children, especially my son, adores Pikachu. It carries subtle subliminal messages. It belongs to him, but I was simply carrying it as I exited the airport.”
This month, Djokovic is aiming for an unprecedented 11th title at the Australian Open and commenced his journey with a win against the young Basavareddy, who notably took the first set in a commendable display.
Next, Djokovic is scheduled to face qualifier Jaime Faria from Portugal in the second round, where he is widely regarded as the strong favorite to advance. This could potentially lead to a rematch with the towering 6’11 American Reilly Opelka, who previously eliminated him from the Brisbane International tournament earlier this month.
