‘Nothing Will Drive Him More…’: Gavaskar’s Bold Champions Trophy Prediction for Virat Kohli
2 months ago | 5 Views
Batting legend Sunil Gavaskar has expressed his support for Virat Kohli, a player known for his performance in high-stakes matches, as he aims to rediscover his form in the forthcoming Champions Trophy. Kohli has been experiencing a challenging period with the bat, having faced difficulties during the recent red-ball season, particularly against spinners from New Zealand and fast bowlers during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia.
At the age of 36, Kohli made a return to the Ranji Trophy after over ten years to regain his batting prowess; however, his struggles persisted, as he was dismissed for a mere 6 runs off 15 balls. His difficulties continued in One Day Internationals, where he managed only 5 runs in the second match against England.
Gavaskar remains optimistic that Kohli will rise to the occasion at the Champions Trophy and is keen to see how he might celebrate a potential victory, recalling Kohli's memorable Gangnam dance following India's triumph in the 2013 tournament.
"Kohli is a player who thrives in crucial matches, and the chance to score runs and secure the Champions Trophy for India will undoubtedly motivate him. After India's last win in 2013, he celebrated with the Gangnam dance, which was immensely popular at the time. Should he contribute to another victory, we might witness yet another distinctive celebration from him," Gavaskar noted in his column for Sportstar.
In the 2013 Champions Trophy final, Kohli played a vital role, scoring 48 runs in a match that was reduced to 20 overs per side due to rain. His celebration included a performance of PSY's hit song Gangnam Style, which was a trending sensation that year.
Under Kohli's leadership, India reached the final of the 2017 Champions Trophy, but unfortunately, they were unable to secure the title, losing to Pakistan.
"India firm favourites to win Champions Trophy"
Gavaskar expresses the belief that the present Indian team is once again the strong favourite to secure victory in the prestigious ICC event, highlighting the unity within the squad.
"India, in addition to their considerable talent, will be regarded as the leading contenders to triumph in the ICC Champions Trophy once more. The camaraderie within the team is commendable, as evidenced by their spirited support for teammates who received individual accolades at the recent annual BCCI awards ceremony. A team that shares laughter is a cohesive unit that will naturally strive to support one another," he stated.
