‘Not for Me to Decide… You Have Rohit Sharma’: Allan Donald on BCCI’s Call for Indian Stars in SA20

Allan Donald, the ambassador for SA20, characterized the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as the most influential cricket board in the world. He highlighted that the participation of more prominent Indian cricketers in the league would signify a major leap forward for South African cricket and its fans. At present, the only Indian player involved in SA20 is the recently retired Dinesh Karthik, who represents the Paarl Royals. Donald commended Karthik's involvement in the current season and expressed optimism that more Indian players would join SA20 in the future. He specifically mentioned his desire to see India’s captain Rohit Sharma, the outstanding Jasprit Bumrah, and the illustrious Virat Kohli compete in this league.

"It is not within my authority to make decisions, but it is evident that the BCCI is the most powerful cricket board globally. The inclusion of younger, talented players would be advantageous. Established players like Rohit Sharma have demonstrated their capabilities over time," he stated.

"If there are Indian cricketers keen on participating in the SA20, it would be extraordinary. The development of this league would be significant," he continued.

"Will we see more Indian cricketers coming to our shores to join SA20? I observed the inaugural year and recognized its potential. The second year exceeded expectations, and this year we are reaching unprecedented levels."

Known as 'White Lightning' for his remarkable bowling speed during his career, Donald concluded, "It would certainly be fantastic. If Indian cricketers are available, I am confident that Graeme Smith and his team would take advantage of that opportunity."

‘DK has done unbelievable work off the field’: Donald

Returning to the subject of Karthik, Donald remarked that although Karthik may not have dazzled with his batting, he has made noteworthy contributions off the field.

"I was with him at Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2016. He was a dedicated player, and I believe this year we witnessed glimpses of the talent he possesses with the Paarl Royals.

"I maintain a close friendship with head coach Trevor Penney, who informed me that DK's efforts off the field have been remarkable. I do not think we have yet seen DK's full potential. He has delivered crucial scores when it mattered most, particularly here in Paarl, where the pitch was slow and the ball turned significantly," Donald stated.

He further noted, "Many South African cricketers regard Indian players as their idols. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli—everyone wants to see them participating in this league."

Regarding franchise cricket, Donald expressed his belief that the IPL remains the premier tournament, while also stating that the SA20 "has the potential for longevity."

"This event feels monumental. It resembles the atmosphere of a World Cup, specifically a T20 World Cup. Everything about it is truly impressive.

"The commissioner of SA20, Smith, is correct in asserting that they have established the right T20 model moving forward. We are all eagerly anticipating what lies ahead; it is indeed a hectic month," he commented.

"It involves a lot of travel and hustle. However, the caliber of cricket being played, along with the exceptional talent of the cricketers and the overseas players who have stepped up with their teams, is nothing short of world-class."

As the bowling coach for the Durban Super Giants this year, Donald added, "The international players are collaborating with our young cricketers, who are rapidly learning from these experienced individuals. It is truly remarkable. I can confidently assert, and I take great pride in saying this as a South African, that this is a significant event."
