‘Not Fun, Sanjana’: KL Rahul’s Witty Response Highlights India’s Spin Dominance

In numerous respects, KL Rahul emerged as India's unrecognized champion during the Champions Trophy 2025. Frequently facing the challenge of maintaining his position in the team against Rishabh Pant, Rahul delivered reliable performances behind the stumps and made invaluable contributions with the bat in high-pressure situations. His insightful decision-making and clear communication significantly aided Captain Rohit Sharma in making DRS calls. Among the various roles Rahul undertook during India's triumphant campaign in the Champions Trophy, he regarded wicketkeeping to India's spin quartet as the most challenging.

Among the eight teams participating, India uniquely boasted five authentic spin options within their squad. The fact that three of these players—Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and Washington Sundar—were also proficient with the bat provided an advantage that no other team possessed. Although Sundar did not participate in any matches, the other four, including specialist spinners Varun Chakaravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav, played pivotal roles.

Chakaravarthy, who made his debut in the final group match against New Zealand, emerged as India's joint-highest wicket-taker of the tournament alongside pacer Mohammed Shami, despite playing only three matches. He secured 9 wickets at a strike rate of 20. His spin-bowling counterpart, Kuldeep, claimed 7 wickets, while the left-arm spin-bowling all-rounders Jadeja and Axar collectively took 10 wickets. Overall, India's spinners accounted for 26 wickets in the Champions Trophy, the highest tally by any team.

Rahul observed all of this from behind the stumps. However, when TV presenter Sanjana Ganesan, who is also the spouse of Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah, inquired about the "fun" aspect of keeping to India's spin quartet, Rahul responded, "Not fun, Sanjana! I have had to squat 200-250 times when these spinners are bowling."

The response elicited immediate laughter from Sanjana, who was employed by the ICC during the prestigious event.

"They possess exceptional quality. The pitches certainly aided them to some extent, which rendered them even more formidable. This presents an additional challenge for me behind the stumps. Their bowling performance and utilization of the conditions have been remarkable," Rahul elaborated.

Rahul reflects on India's triumph in the Champions Trophy.

"Securing victories in ICC tournaments is no simple feat, and this is my first, so I am absolutely thrilled," Rahul expressed.

"It has been a collective team effort; all 11-12 players have risen to the occasion, and this is one of the primary reasons for our success in the tournament."

An accomplished batsman, Rahul initially took on the role of opener for India in limited-overs cricket.

However, a decline in form and intense media scrutiny compelled him to revamp his batting approach.

Recently, he transitioned to the number six position as he surpassed Rishabh Pant in the wicketkeeping role.

"What my coaches have instilled in me from a young age is that cricket is a team sport, and one must be adaptable to meet the team's needs," remarked Rahul, who is characterized by his distinctive beard and man bun on his athletic, tattooed physique.

"It demands extensive preparation and considerable effort off the field. I observe and learn from the batsmen I admire in the four, five, and six positions."

Rahul began his cricketing career as a wicketkeeper-batsman but had relinquished the gloves in domestic competitions.

It was not until Pant sustained an injury during the series against Australia in 2020 that he returned to wicketkeeping duties.

"I kept wickets during that series, batted at number five, and performed admirably," Rahul noted.

"Since then, the captain and team management believed I could fulfill that role."
