Sarfaraz Ahmed last represented Pakistan in December 2023, and his recent appointment as Team Director for the Quetta Gladiators has sparked increasing speculation regarding his retirement from cricket. In a statement made prior to the PSL 2025 season, Sarfaraz addressed these rumors and clarified that he has not officially retired.

In an interview with Cricket Pakistan, the former captain of the national team remarked, “I haven’t announced my retirement yet.”

He expressed the emotional toll of being away from the sport, stating, “For someone who has dedicated their life to cricket, it is undoubtedly painful to be distanced from the game. Every player eventually faces the moment to step back, but I strive to make the most of every match I participate in.”

‘Maybe I’ll get another chance': Sarfaraz Ahmed

Sarfaraz hinted at the possibility of a return, saying, “I still hold onto some hope that perhaps I’ll get another opportunity. I never claimed that I must play for Pakistan — naturally, it is a dream for every player to represent their nation. My focus is on performing well in any cricket I play and giving my utmost effort.”

He further added, “When I feel the time has come, I will announce it myself — yes, my cricket journey is over now.”

During his tenure as captain from 2016 to 2019, Pakistan achieved significant success, including winning the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy by defeating India in the final. He also guided the team to victory in the 2006 U-19 World Cup, again overcoming India in the final match.

Sarfaraz was removed from his captaincy role before Pakistan's tour of Australia in October 2019 due to a series of poor performances. Under his leadership, Pakistan secured 29 victories out of 37 matches and reached the No. 1 ranking in T20I cricket. In One Day Internationals, the team won 28 out of 50 matches, resulting in a win rate of 58.33%.

Throughout his international career, he has played in 54 Tests, 117 ODIs, and 61 T20Is, accumulating a total of 6,164 runs across all formats, including six centuries and 32 half-centuries. Notably, under his captaincy, Pakistan achieved an impressive record of winning 11 consecutive T20I series, the highest for any captain from the country.
