The anticipation for the showdown between Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah was palpable, and the encounter did not disappoint, as both players were determined to assert their dominance. Bumrah, making his return to competitive cricket after a four-month hiatus, was brought into the bowling attack by Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya during the fourth over of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) innings in Match 20 of the IPL 2025 season.
On the very first delivery of the fourth over, Devdutt Padikkal took a single, allowing Virat Kohli to face Bumrah. The audience at Wankhede Stadium was on the edge of their seats, eager to witness the unfolding drama, which certainly met expectations.
Kohli made a powerful statement on the second ball of the over against Bumrah. The skilled fast bowler delivered a short ball, but the right-handed batsman shifted towards the leg side and launched it over deep midwicket for a six.
“There’s no respect; batters are intent on dominating this powerplay, regardless of the bowler,” remarked former West Indies fast bowler Ian Bishop during the commentary.
In contrast, former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar welcomed Bumrah back with the words, “Welcome back, Jasprit.”
Kohli faced a total of six deliveries from Jasprit Bumrah in the match against RCB, managing to score 10 runs, which included one six. Prior to this encounter between the Mumbai Indians and RCB, Bumrah had a notable advantage over Kohli, having dismissed the 36-year-old batsman five times in IPL history.
During RCB's innings, Kohli and Bumrah engaged in some light-hearted banter. When Kohli reached the non-striker's end, Bumrah pretended to throw the ball at the stumps but ultimately refrained from doing so. As Bumrah approached the popping crease, Virat Kohli was observed playfully teasing him.
Virat Kohli scores 67 runs
Right-handed batsman Virat Kohli made a significant contribution by scoring 67 runs off 42 deliveries against the Mumbai Indians, featuring eight boundaries and two sixes in his innings.
Kohli's innings came to an end in the 15th over when he was dismissed by Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya, marking a pivotal moment for the home team as Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) were aggressively pursuing runs.
Rajat Patidar also played an important role, contributing 64 runs, which helped RCB reach a total of 221 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in their 20 overs. Notably, Jasprit Bumrah concluded his spell without taking a wicket, finishing with figures of 0 for 29.
Earlier in the match, the Mumbai Indians had an excellent start, with Trent Boult taking the wicket of Phil Salt in the very first over.
The Mumbai Indians won the toss and chose to bowl first. In addition to Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit Sharma was declared fit to play and participated as an impact substitute in the match.
