"No Hints Given": Jadeja Expresses Surprise at Ashwin's Sudden Retirement

1 day ago | 5 Views

All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja expressed his surprise, akin to that of many others, upon hearing of Ravichandran Ashwin's international retirement, which was announced following the conclusion of the Gabba Test against Australia. Jadeja disclosed that he learned of the off-spinner's decision merely five minutes prior to the press conference where Ashwin officially announced his departure from international cricket.

Jadeja and Ashwin have established one of the most potent bowling partnerships in Test cricket, having played together in 58 matches and collectively taking 587 wickets.

This duo stands as India's most successful bowling pair, surpassing the previous record held by Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh, who took 501 wickets together.

"I was informed about the retirement at the very last moment, just five minutes before the press conference. It was quite shocking. We had spent the entire day together, and he did not provide me with any indication. I found out at the last minute. We all understand how Ashwin thinks," Jadeja remarked to reporters at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Saturday.

Ashwin 'on-field mentor' for Jadeja

Jadeja, who has developed a remarkable rapport with Ashwin, referred to him as his "on-field mentor." Nevertheless, the left-arm spinner believes that the younger players should seize the opportunity following Ashwin's retirement, during which he achieved a remarkable tally of 537 Test wickets.

Both Ashwin and Jadeja have frequently rescued India with their batting prowess, with their latest notable performance occurring in the Chennai Test against Bangladesh earlier this year.

"He is akin to my on-field mentor. We have played alongside each other for many years, consistently exchanging messages about the match situation and the intentions of the batters," Jadeja remarked.

"I will certainly miss these interactions. We can only hope to find an all-rounder and bowler who can match Ashwin's calibre. While no one can truly replace a player, transitions do occur. We must adapt and move forward. India is rich in talent, and no one is irreplaceable. This presents a golden opportunity for any young player to step up," he continued.

In the third Test against Australia, Jadeja's innings of 77 in the first innings was instrumental in securing a draw for India. He noted that this performance significantly enhanced his confidence.

"Scoring runs when the team is in a challenging position instils confidence," he stated.

"My mindset will remain consistent. I will play according to the match situation and fulfil the team's requirements," he added.

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy is currently tied, with India and Australia set to compete in the Boxing Day Test at the MCG, commencing on December 26, 2024.
