Nitish Rana Shares Insightful Moment with Rohit Sharma: "I Wanted to Open Up, But He Guided Me"
3 months ago | 5 Views
The young members of the Indian cricket team consistently express their admiration for Rohit Sharma, referring to him as 'bhaiya' and likening him to an older brother. They emphasize that he creates an inclusive environment, allowing them to freely express themselves. This portrayal of Rohit as an inspirational leader and a captain who prioritizes his players has significantly influenced Indian cricket. Emerging talents frequently commend his supportive nature, viewing him as a crucial source of guidance. Recently, prominent sports broadcaster Jatin Sapru noted that Rohit’s close associates within the team are these young and promising players, affectionately dubbed 'garden mein ghoomne wale ladke.'
Moreover, Rohit extends his mentorship to more experienced players as well. A notable example is Nitish Rana, who began his IPL journey in 2013 under Rohit's leadership at the Mumbai Indians. Although Rana gained prominence in the IPL after joining the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2018, the influence of Rohit on his career remains significant.
Last year, during IPL 2023, Rana faced challenges as the captain of KKR. A single piece of advice from Rohit proved transformative for him. After stepping in as a replacement for the injured Shreyas Iyer, KKR struggled, losing eight out of fourteen matches and finishing seventh in the standings. Despite facing his own difficulties with MI, Rohit made a concerted effort to alleviate some of the pressure on Rana.
'What is captaincy?' How Rohit Sharma calmed Nitish Rana
Last year, during my tenure as captain, I approached Rohit bhaiya. We experienced a mix of outcomes, winning two matches and then losing two. He inquired, "Nitish, what is your perspective on captaincy?" I was on the verge of expressing my thoughts. In truth, I wished to share my genuine feelings, but Rohit bhaiya interrupted me. He remarked that captaincy is trivial, merely about adjusting bowlers and repositioning fielders; it does not encompass true leadership, as Rana recounted on TRS Clips.
His intention was to soothe my nerves and provide clarity. He conveyed that as long as the results favor you, everything is fine. However, on days when performance falters, regardless of how adeptly one leads, recognition may elude you. Therefore, he advised me to focus on my process and have confidence in myself. The more one complicates matters, the more challenging it becomes; conversely, simplicity leads to ease.
Despite the challenges faced by his team, Rana maintained an impressive personal performance, concluding the season with 413 runs—his highest tally in the IPL—averaging 31.77, which included three half-centuries. Typically a prolific scorer, Rana has consistently achieved 300-run seasons since 2017. Interestingly, he did not receive as many opportunities as he desired, participating in only two matches and accumulating 42 runs. Nevertheless, Rana remained unfazed as KKR triumphed in the IPL, securing the trophy for the third time in their history.
