Nick Kyrgios Claps Back: Reflecting on the '29-Year-Old Child' Insult from an Athlete's Lens
2 months ago | 5 Views
Nick Kyrgios once again found himself at the centre of media attention as he made his return to competitive tennis after an 18-month hiatus caused by chronic injuries that hindered his ability to compete. Unfortunately, his comeback did not go as planned, as he was eliminated in the first round of his home grand slam, the Australian Open, by unseeded British player Jacob Fearnley in straight sets.
Following the 29-year-old athlete's early exit, former Australian rules football player and current presenter Kane Cornes criticized Kyrgios for his conduct both on and off the court, prompting a sharp response from the Australian tennis player via social media.
“We discuss this individual far too often,” Cornes remarked on SEn after Kyrgios's defeat. “He positions himself above others while criticizing everyone, including ball kids, line judges, and fellow competitors.”
“He behaves like a child,” he continued harshly. “At 29 years old, he still acts like a child. Considering his conduct and the role model he has been, I believe no one has disappointed him more. No one has garnered more attention with so little success over an extended period than he has.”
Kyrgios, however, was unyielding in his response on social media, expressing his disdain for the criticism and retorting to Cornes: “Gotta love comments from an athlete who didn’t play a global sport. Appreciate the kind [words] brother x.” The two also engaged in a brief exchange shortly thereafter.
Cornes' remarks follow former world number one tennis player Andy Roddick's criticism of Kyrgios, labelling him as a tennis 'influencer' who prioritizes social media approval over actual performance.
End of the road for Kyrgios?
Kyrgios emerged as one of Australia’s most promising athletic talents after achieving victories over Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic in his initial matches against the 'big three.' Despite his dynamic playing style, powerful serve, and impressive forehand, Kyrgios reached a career-high ranking of number 13 in the world but was unable to enter the ATP's top ten.
The pinnacle of Kyrgios' career occurred in 2022, when he advanced to the Wimbledon final in singles, ultimately succumbing to Djokovic. Additionally, he secured the men’s doubles title at the Australian Open, partnering with his close friend and fellow Australian, Thanasi Kokkinakis.
This year, Kyrgios and Kokkinakis aimed to replicate their previous success; however, Kokkinakis experienced some minor injuries during a gruelling five-set match against Jack Draper, which may jeopardize their partnership.
Kyrgios also indicated that he anticipated his defeat to Fearnley would mark his final singles match at the Australian Open, as the local favourite appeared visibly distressed throughout the contest.
