New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon's current visit to India has already delighted cricket enthusiasts, showcasing the shared passion for the sport between these two cricket-loving nations. This was further exemplified when Luxon shared a social media post after participating in a game of 'gully cricket' in the streets of New Delhi, accompanied by local children and the iconic 1983 World Cup-winning captain, Kapil Dev.
In an Instagram video, Luxon expressed, "Working hard in India to hit it out of the park for Kiwis," alongside Kiwi spinner Ajaz Patel, who originates from Mumbai, and the esteemed former captain Ross Taylor, who has been accompanying Luxon during this diplomatic mission focused on enhancing trade relations between the two countries.
In the video, Luxon remarked, “This is pretty unbelievable, actually. I’m playing cricket with Kapil Dev, which is quite special. In the streets of New Delhi, with some amazing young kids who are part of a program aimed at integrating cricket into their lives.”
“We’ve got Ajaz Patel and Ross Taylor who are playing against Kapil Dev and myself, which I’m not sure is a fair fight,” joked Luxon. “But we’re going to give it a go.”
PM Luxon catches Patel out
The video features clips of international stars, including Luxon, engaging in batting and bowling on the street under the early morning sun. Taylor is seen both batting and fielding in the slips, while Dev poses for photographs with numerous young fans.
Luxon successfully caught Ajaz Patel, dismissing the left-handed spinner. Patel remarked, “I thought I’d just glance it down the leg-side, but the PM was right there, and he caught it—unbelievable.” Taylor also praised the Prime Minister for the impressive catch.
During this trip, Luxon humorously interacted with his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, about India's recent victory over the Black Caps in the Champions Trophy final, exchanging light-hearted banter with the Indian Prime Minister.
"I truly appreciate that PM Modi refrained from mentioning New Zealand's loss in the Champions Trophy to India, and I didn’t bring up our Test wins in India. Let’s keep it that way to avoid any diplomatic incidents," Luxon stated, eliciting a positive response and a smile from Modi, with Ross Taylor present as well.
