Neeraj Chopra Reveals Disturbing Truth About Doping in India

Doping remains a significant challenge within Indian sports. According to a report published by WADA, India recorded the highest incidence of drug violations globally in 2022. A total of 3,865 samples were analyzed from January to December 2022, with 125 yielding Adverse Analytical Findings (AAFs). The report highlighted that India is the only nation to exceed 100 positive results, while countries with greater testing volumes reported considerably fewer AAFs.
In a decade-long global study on positive doping cases involving minors, WADA identified India as the second worst offender, following Russia, with China ranking third.
When Neeraj Chopra, India's most celebrated athlete, was questioned about the prevalence of doping among Indian competitors, he conveyed profound disappointment. In an interview with Lallantop, he remarked, “Indeed, doping has become a significant issue among our athletes in India. I want to emphasize that once the notion of doping takes root, it becomes increasingly difficult to overcome. Athletes may believe that doping is the only path to enhanced performance, but that is a misconception. True progress comes from hard work, self-belief, and proper guidance from coaches. It is essential to maintain a healthy diet, ensure adequate rest, and commit to diligent training. The reality is that once an athlete resorts to doping, they are subject to testing and can face bans of 2 to 4 years. Such consequences can be devastating. Therefore, to compete at a high level, it is crucial to shift the mindset of our athletes. I urge coaches to refrain from suggesting that doping is a viable option and to keep athletes away from it.”
He further stated, “If we can address this issue, the standard of our sports will improve. Currently, it is concerning that talented young athletes often succumb to doping as they progress in their careers. They must also be cautious about their nutrition and lifestyle choices.”
A recent report from NADA indicated that 142 Indian athletes were found to have engaged in doping activities from April 2022 to March 2023. Additionally, NADA disclosed that 13 out of 27 cricketers who were tested applied for Therapeutic Use Exemption.
