Neeraj Chopra Lausanne Diamond League Live: He looked far from his best for much of the night but then came alive right at the end, even coming close to doing the one thing he hasn't managed to do in his trailblazing career. He improved on his Paris throw of 89.45m by getting to 89.49m but his reaction to seeing where that javelin landed on the big screen says that he didn't care much for that. Neeraj thought that he had finally breached the 90m but he was less than 50 centimetres behind that. Such are the margins in sports at the highest level.

Neeraj Chopra Lausanne Diamond League Live: So near yet so far for Neeraj! Peters was leading the cheers for as Neeraj wound himself up for the throw. The Indian let out a roar as soon as that javelin left his hand, he felt very good indeed. But it falls on 89.49m and Neeraj puts his hands on his head. It is a season's best for Neeraj, goes past what he managed at the Paris Olympics, but he is not happy with that.

Well it heated up properly right at the end there.

Neeraj Chopra Lausanne Diamond League Live: There it is! What a way to finish a brilliant night from Anderson Peters. He blasts past the meet record of 90.16m set all the way back in 2015 by Keshorn Walcott with a throw of 90.61m.

Neeraj Chopra Lausanne Diamond League Live: Well, it had to happen, isn't it? He hasn't exactly jumped right to the top but it was getting last chance saloon for Neeraj and he comes up with a throw of 85.58m to shove Felfner down to fourth.

Neeraj Chopra Lausanne Diamond League Live: Three foul throws in that round, two of which was for Weber at 2nd and Felfner at 3rd. Vadlejch has been steadily improving with each throw and gets to 82.03m, which is still well below is usual standards.

Neeraj Chopra Lausanne Diamond League Live: Still no improvement on his second throw for the reigning world champion. Anderson Peters, meanwhile, is absolutely flying. He follows up 86.36, 88.49m and 87.40m with 86.59m.

Neeraj Chopra Lausanne Diamond League Live: He gets just 83.13m but he hangs on to fourth though. Neeraj is yet to breach 85m today. Wonder if this is just him trying to be careful with the groin injury. He only needs to finish in the top six to qualify for the final, remember.

Neeraj Chopra Lausanne Diamond League Live: Ukraine's Artur Felfner is the man who keeps Neeraj out of the top three this time with a throw of 83.38m.

Neeraj Chopra Lausanne Diamond League Live: He has got 83.21m with his second throw but Anderson Peters and Julian Weber both make big improvements to remain first and second respectively. Peters throws a monster 88.49m to stay at the top, Weber throws 87.08m.

Vadlejch, the League leader and arguably the most consistent thrower in the last couple of years apart from Neeraj, had a no throw first up and then threw 78.23m.

Neeraj Chopra Lausanne Diamond League Live: Roderick Genki Dean is the last thrower of this round and he jumps up to third with a throw of 83.19m. Julian Weber is second with 85.07m and Peters is top with 86.36m.

Neeraj Chopra Lausanne Diamond League Live: And the Indian also has the first throw. He manages to send the javelin 82.10m. Paris bronze medallist Anderson Peters follows up with a throw of 86.36m.

Neeraj Chopra Lausanne Diamond League Live: As stated earlier, Neeraj needs to finish in the top six today to qualify for the Diamond League Finals. Pretty safe to say that we can expect him to do that today.

Neeraj Chopra Lausanne Diamond League Live: Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen has won the men's 1500m with a meet record time of 3:27.83 ahead of Paris 2024 gold medallist Cole Hocker from USA. Hobbs Kessler (USA) finishes third. Up next is the women's 100m and we should have the javelin throwers walking out shortly.

Neeraj Chopra Lausanne Diamond League Live: The Diamond League can be streamed live on Jio Cinema. It is also being broadcast on Sports18.

The men's javelin final is scheduled to start at 12.12am IST.

Neeraj Chopra Lausanne Diamond League Live: Since the Tokyo Olympics, Neeraj has managed top-two finishes in all of the Diamond League events he has appeared in. He was second with a throw of 89.94m at Stockholm 2022, first (89.09m) at Lausanne 2022, first (88.44m) at Zurich 2022, first (88.67m) at Doha 2023, first (87.66m) at Lausanne 2023, second (85.71m) at Zurich 2023, second (83.80m) at Eugene 2023 and second (88.36m) at Doha 2024.

Neeraj Chopra Lausanne Diamond League Live: Arshad Nadeem blew his competition out of the water with an Olympic record throw 92.97m to win the gold medal in Paris. He had been active in the Diamond League before that but Nadeem has chosen to give this leg of the season a miss. And who can blame him? Nadeem did something no one from his country could ever come close to doing by winning the Olympic gold. He can also rest his shoulder, for which he needed treatment during the final in Paris.

Neeraj Chopra Lausanne Diamond League Live: It is fairly safe to say that absolutely no one would have held it against Neeraj for giving this, and indeed the rest of the season, a skip after winning the silver in Paris. However, Neeraj explained the reason as to why he decided to continue his season after the Olympics. "After the last Olympics we realised that we should continue our season like everyone else and not return to India immediately. Other athletes do not stop training till the season ends," he said.

Neeraj Chopra Lausanne Diamond League Live: Crossing the 90m mark is among the very few things Neeraj hasn't been able to do in javelin throw. At the Paris Olympics, he had no choice but to do that and more if he was to cross Arshad Nadeem and win a second consecutive gold. Neeraj was, however, pretty confident of breaking that barrier on the night at the Stade de France.

"I felt I could increase the distance. My two no throws in qualification and final, they were second and third best throws and my season best as well. To increase distance I need to be injury free. In my mind I know need to give 100 percent but because of the injury I am not able to give 100 percent. My body and mind stops me from making that extra effort," he had said.

Neeraj Chopra Lausanne Diamond League Live: …was the men's high jump yesterday night. And yes, it was all about Armand Duplantis. He broke the world record like it was nothing at the Paris Olympics and, for now, that record stays. However, Duplantis did break the meet record by clearing 6.15m.

For the uninitiated, only some of the events in a meet are of designated as Diamond League events featuring international athletes. The rest (generally) tend to be national level events for the host nation. Of the 26 events that are being held today, and 27 in total at this meet, 14 are Diamong League level events.

Neeraj Chopra Lausanne Diamond League Live: The Athletissima has been held in Lausanne since 1977. Early editions were held at the Stade Pierre de Coubertin and since 1986, it has been held at the Stade Olympique de la Pontaise. It became a part of the IAAF Grand Prix circuit in 1988 and was then promoted to the IAAF Super Grand Prix circuit in 2003. Since 2010, it has been a regular in the Diamond League.

Neeraj Chopra Lausanne Diamond League Live: Three of the 10 throwers on show today have managed to cross the 90m mark, which should tell you a lot about the standard of the field.

Neeraj Chopra Lausanne Diamond League Live: Neeraj won his first title in Lausanne in 2022 with a throw of 89.09m. Jakub Vadlejch was second with a throw of 85.88m while USA's Curtis Thompson was third with 83.72m. The next year, Neeraj threw 87.68m and won the title again. This time, Vadlejch was third with a throw of 86.13m while Julian Weber of Germany came second with a throw of 87.03m.

Neeraj Chopra Lausanne Diamond League Live: We are approaching Neeraj Chopra time! He was managing a groin injury at the Paris Olympics and yet, it took an Olympic record throw for someone to stop him from winning a second consecutive gold medal. Do remember that while Nadeem's best throw was a few meters ahead of Neeraj's, no one really came close to properly challenging his best and only legitimate throw of 89.45m at the 2024 Olympics. Nadeem is not there today and while that doesn't mean Neeraj is the runaway favourite, he will be the man to beat in Lausanne today. The only thing to be considered would be to what extent he will push himself considering he is still managing that groin injury.
