Neeraj Chopra Classic — A New Era for Indian Athletics

New Delhi: When Neeraj Chopra discusses his Olympic medals and his commitment to the sport through the upcoming Neeraj Chopra Classic, an important international event set to take place in Bengaluru next month, his enthusiasm is palpable. This new initiative clearly holds significant importance for him, likely ranking alongside his two Olympic medals and the world title that established him as a prominent figure in global athletics.

Neeraj's groundbreaking achievements on the field have elevated Indian athletics on the international stage, yet he understands that fostering the sport requires the development and maintenance of a comprehensive ecosystem. Hosting premier athletics events in India is a crucial initial step toward that goal.

On May 24, he will be eager to compete before Indian fans at Kanteerava Stadium, where a full crowd is anticipated to witness him and other international athletes in action. The event promises to be filled with star power.

Confirmed participants include two-time world champion Anderson Peters, American Curtis Thompson, the season leader with a throw of 87.76m, Germany's 2016 Olympic champion Thomas Rohler, and Kenya's Julius Yego, the Rio Olympic silver medallist and 2015 world champion. Additional prominent names are expected to join in the coming days, along with four to five Indian athletes who will have the chance to compete alongside these global stars.

Without a doubt, the most prominent figure in this elite lineup will be Neeraj Chopra himself. “Yes, count me in as well,” he remarked with a broad smile, proudly listing the names of his fellow competitors.

An invitation has also been extended to Arshad Nadeem, the Paris Olympics champion from Pakistan, though his participation is still pending confirmation. “I have reached out to Arshad and invited him, just like the other top throwers. He is currently discussing it with his coach, and it will require government approval. Once everything is finalized, we will announce the complete list,” Neeraj stated during a video conference from his training base in Potchefstroom, South Africa.

“I encourage parents to bring their children to witness the world-class competition.”

“Though I wanted it to happen in Panchkula because it’s my native place, but the most important thing is that it’s happening in India. I have great memories of Bengaluru and it’s a very good venue to start this international competition. I am very excited to be part of this event and doing my bit (JSW and AFI are part of organisers) to bring a world class track and field event in India. It’s a dream come true for me,” said Neeraj.

Neeraj's involvement with the project is deeply personal. He has actively engaged with the throwers, persuading them to travel to India. Currently, he is fully committed, balancing his training for the Doha Diamond League on May 16 with ongoing communication with his team to ensure every detail is meticulously managed for the tournament, aiming to provide international athletes with a memorable experience. His fondness for the city, cultivated through extensive training and participation in local competitions, facilitates his efforts.

"We are overseeing every aspect—from the track to the changing rooms and seating arrangements. Our goal is to provide a first-class facility, ensuring that participants leave with remarkable experiences. We hope they arrive at the new airport."

"This is a new chapter for me. Previously, my routine revolved around training in the morning and returning to my room. Now, I have responsibilities and much to anticipate, and I am relishing this change."

"I have come to understand the numerous elements that must align to organize an event. As athletes, we often remain unaware of these behind-the-scenes details."

Throughout his career, Neeraj has maintained a learner's mindset. He envisions a bright future for Indian athletics, similar to the aspirations he holds for his own career. He has observed events like the Mondo Classic—named after pole vault champion Mondo Duplantis—in Uppsala, Sweden, which attract international track and field stars and elevate the sport's profile in their home countries. This concept resonated with him during his competitive years and has remained with him.

"I have earned medals at the Olympics and world championships, which are proudly displayed at my home. However, this initiative is something entirely different. It provides me with an opportunity to give back to the sport. I aspire to see Indian athletics thrive on the global stage. The international athletics community recognizes the increasing popularity of the sport in India. This could be just the beginning."

In the future, Neeraj aims to establish this event as an annual occurrence.
