National Women's Boxing: Jaismine Aims for More Aggressive Approach

Greater Noida: Jasmine Lamboria, an Olympian from Paris, has frequently faced challenges against aggressive and powerful boxers. When pressured, the predominantly 57kg competitor struggles to regain control. During the quarter-finals of the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, she encountered North Korea’s Won Ungyong, whose strong punches led the referee to halt the match (RSC). Although she performed better against Nesthy Petecio, the silver medallist from the Tokyo Olympics, she still experienced an early exit in the first round.

At 23 years old, the tall boxer, who has traditionally relied on counterattacks, is now determined to enhance her offensive approach. The elite women’s national championships present a valuable opportunity for Jasmine to apply the attacking techniques she has been honing at the Army Sports Institute in Pune.

On Sunday, she showcased a commanding performance against Chandigarh’s Ruchika, winning by second-round RSC to advance to the quarter-finals. In the opening round, Jasmine, a southpaw, landed precise straight punches, resulting in Ruchika receiving two standing counts. Returning with increased intensity in the second round, Jaismine overwhelmed Ruchika with a series of punches, prompting the referee to stop the contest.

“We instructed her to go all out after the first round, and she executed that strategy effectively,” remarked Services coach Chhote Lal Yadav. “This is the focus of our training – to adopt a more aggressive style in the ring. Adapting to this new approach will take time, but she has demonstrated significant improvement in her two matches here,” noted the experienced coach.

Earlier, Jaismine secured a 5-0 victory over Ice Prajapati in the first round on Saturday.

The boxer from Bhiwani, Haryana, demonstrated her skills on the international stage by securing bronze medals at both the Asian Championships and the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. After missing the chance to earn an Olympic quota at the Asian Games, she was presented with another opportunity to compete in the 57kg category and qualify. Just two weeks before the Paris Olympics, Jaismine resumed her training at ASI in Pune.

"She is highly motivated to improve her performance. She is aware of her weaknesses. With her height of 5'9", she possesses a significant advantage, and she needs to be more proactive and assertive in her approach. Additionally, when facing an aggressive opponent, she must learn to manage that intensity," Yadav remarks.

Jaismine's true challenge will arise from upcoming international competitions, including the world championships and a series of World Cups scheduled for this year.

Also advancing to the quarter-finals was Sanamacha Chanu from the Railways Sports Promotion Board, who triumphed over Manipur’s Bindiya Devi Maorem with a score of 5-0 in the 65kg category. Out of the 31 matches held on the third day of the tournament, 14 concluded with a referee stopping the contest (RSC), while four resulted in walkovers. Some states opted out of the competition due to ongoing disputes among the administrators of the Boxing Federation of India in the lead-up to the elections.
