New Delhi: Emerging javelin thrower Sachin Yadav continued his impressive performance by achieving a personal best to secure victory in the men’s javelin event at the National Games held in Dehradun on Wednesday.

Sachin's fifth throw, measuring 84.39 meters, surpassed the previous meet record of 82.23 meters set by Rajendra Singh from Haryana. This achievement marked the fifth consecutive competition in which the athlete from Uttar Pradesh has recorded a throw exceeding 80 meters. Rohit Yadav, also from Uttar Pradesh, finished in second place with a throw of 80.47 meters, while Vikas Sharma from Uttarakhand took third with a distance of 79.33 meters.

At 25 years of age, Sachin first surpassed the 80-meter mark at last year's National Open Athletics Championships in Bengaluru, where he claimed victory with a throw of 80.04 meters. He subsequently secured third place at the Federation Cup with a throw of 80.27 meters, triumphed at the Indian Grand Prix 3 in Bengaluru with a distance of 82.69 meters, and won the All India Police Athletics Championships with a throw of 84.21 meters.

Despite his remarkable performance, Sachin's throw did not meet the automatic qualification standard of 85.50 meters for the World Athletics Championships scheduled in Tokyo later this year. "My objective was to reach the World Athletics automatic qualification mark, but I fell short. I am close to achieving my goal and anticipate accomplishing it in the next competition."

Additionally, Services runner Sawan Barwal, representing Himachal Pradesh, and Haryana high jumper Pooja were among the other athletes who set new meet records during the athletics events at the Games.

Barwal achieved a remarkable distance double by executing a strategically paced 5000m race, finishing with a time of 13:45.93, which surpassed the previous National Games record of 13:50.05 established by G Lakshmanan (Services) in 2015. He had already secured victory in the 10,000m event on the first day of the track and field competitions.

Pooja successfully cleared a height of 1.84m, setting a new meet record that exceeded the previous mark of 1.83m held by Swapna Barman in 2022.

In the men’s 400m hurdles, Ruchit Mori from Gujarat triumphed with a time of 50.97 seconds, followed closely by Hardeep from Punjab at 51.02 seconds and Rohan Kamble from Maharashtra at 51.77 seconds. In the women’s category, Vithya Ramraj from Tamil Nadu secured first place with a time of 58.11 seconds, while her fellow state athlete Srivardhini SK finished second at 59.86 seconds. Neha Dhabale from Maharashtra took third place with a time of 1:00.52.

In the women’s shot put event, Jasmin Kaur from Punjab claimed victory with an impressive throw of 15.97m. Vidhi from Uttar Pradesh finished in second place with a throw of 15.46m, narrowly edging out Delhi’s Srishti Vig, who also recorded a best throw of 15.46m but had a lesser second-best effort.

In hockey, Madhya Pradesh is set to compete against Haryana in the women’s final, while Karnataka will face Uttar Pradesh in the men’s final. Both Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka advanced to their respective finals after winning their semi-final matches in shoot-outs.

In table tennis, the top-seeded G Sathiyan from Tamil Nadu and the second-seeded Payas Jain from Delhi progressed to the men’s singles semi-finals with identical 3-1 victories. However, the women’s singles event witnessed a significant upset, as unseeded Shriya Anand from Tamil Nadu defeated the top-seeded Sutirtha Mukherjee 3-1 to secure her place in the semi-finals.
