Nathan Lyon Calls Kohli-Jaiswal Mix-Up 'One of the Best Barbecues' After Dramatic Run-Out

Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal were looking good to help India bounce back on Day 2 of the fourth Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, especially after Australia set a hefty target of 474 in their first innings. But then, a disastrous mix-up in the last half-hour saw Jaiswal, who had made a solid 82, heading back to the pavilion. Nathan Lyon, the Australian off-spinner, humorously referred to the incident as a "barbecue."

This run-out sparked a massive debate on social media about who was to blame. It all kicked off when Jaiswal hit a delivery from Scott Boland to Pat Cummins at mid-on and took off for a single without a second thought. Kohli, however, hesitated after taking a step forward and ended up turning his back, leaving Jaiswal stranded. This unfortunate mix-up brought their 102-run partnership for the third wicket to a sudden end.

Lyon mentioned to ABC Sport, "That was definitely one of the best barbecues I've ever witnessed. It totally caught me off guard. They were handling it pretty chill out there."

He continued, "I get that pressure can mess with your head, and we managed to create a bit of that pressure – at least that's how it seemed to me. Those silly run-outs can really drive a coach crazy, right?"

Jaiswal points out, 'That was my decision'

When Alex Carey removed the bails at the striker's end, Jaiswal appeared to signal to Kohli, suggesting, 'That was my call.' But Kohli responded by indicating that there was no run available.

Not long after Jaiswal was out, Kohli followed him back to the pavilion after chasing a wide ball outside off stump. The 36-year-old seemed poised for a big score, consistently leaving deliveries that were pitched on the fourth and fifth stump lines. However, Jaiswal's wicket might have affected his mindset, and ultimately, Kohli ended up with 36 runs.

Steve Smith, who scored 140 runs in Australia's first innings, mentioned that Kohli was looking in great form and seemed ready to make a significant contribution.

He looked sharp today. I thought to myself, 'Wow, he's really got it going on,' Smith shared with the press.

"I think that was the first ball he actually played on that fifth or sixth stump line. He was super disciplined today. He was leaving the ball well, making the bowlers work a bit harder, and he scored nicely through the leg side when they bowled short," he continued.

At the end of Day 2 in the Boxing Day Test, India was at 164/5, still behind by 310 runs. Rishabh Pant (6*) and Ravindra Jadeja (4*) will pick things up on the third day of this important fourth Test.
