My Role Has Evolved Over the Years: Rohit Sharma

3 days ago | 5 Views

Mumbai: Rohit Sharma has encountered a challenging beginning in the Indian Premier League. In his first match against the Chennai Super Kings, he was dismissed without scoring, flicking the ball directly to short mid-wicket. During his second match against the Gujarat Titans, he managed to hit two crisp boundaries but was ultimately bowled out by a stunning delivery from Mohammed Siraj. In the third match against the Kolkata Knight Riders, he had a prime opportunity to accumulate runs after the Mumbai Indians bowlers restricted KKR to just 116 runs. However, Rohit was unable to capitalize on this chance, scoring only 13 runs before misjudging a delivery from Andre Russell, resulting in a catch off the toe end of his bat.

It is too early to determine whether his struggles are due to a lack of form or simply bad luck. In his recent performance for India during the Champions Trophy, he played a pivotal role, scoring a match-winning half-century in the final.

The former captain of the Mumbai Indians has been assigned a new role this season, primarily serving as an Impact Substitute.

In a discussion with the broadcaster, Rohit reflected on the evolution of his role over the years. “Since my debut, many things have changed. I used to bat in the middle order; now I open the innings. I was once the captain, and now I am not. Some of my teammates from our championship-winning days have transitioned into coaching roles. While many roles have shifted, my mindset remains constant. My goal for this team is unchanged: to win games and trophies. That is the essence of the Mumbai Indians. Over the years, we have secured trophies and turned around matches from seemingly impossible situations. That is what MI and Mumbai represent,” Rohit stated on JioHotstar.

Recognized for their slow starts, the MI team has secured only one victory out of three matches, placing them fifth in the standings. Rohit, who has led MI to five championship titles, emphasized that the objective remains to reclaim the trophy for the franchise. The team has bolstered its roster during the mega auction, and despite losing their first two away games, they showcased a strong performance in their initial home match on Monday, defeating KKR by eight wickets in a comprehensive display across all aspects of the game. While MI awaits the return of their star fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, the squad has been enhanced by the new acquisitions from the auction. Rohit noted that the team has successfully integrated a mix of seasoned players and promising young talent for this season.

"Veterans like Trent Boult, who are familiar with our environment, contribute significant experience and insight into MI’s culture. Additionally, we have Mitchell Santner, the captain of New Zealand, who brings both skill and experience. Players such as Will Jacks and Reece Topley offer diversity, while Ryan Rickelton stands out as an exciting young talent. Each of these individuals contributes unique strengths to the team, and when combined, they create a substantial impact. We also have numerous young Indian players with immense potential, and I am eager to play alongside them. My primary aim is to secure the IPL trophy and restore glory to the Mumbai Indians."
