India's fast bowler Mohammed Shami's sister, along with her mother-in-law and other family members, has come under scrutiny due to allegations of fraud related to the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA), as reported by the news agency PTI.

A district-level inquiry into suspected MNREGA fraud has implicated several individuals, including relatives of Shami.

Gule Ayesha, the mother-in-law of Shami's sister and the current village head in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh, is reportedly at the center of this controversy.

District Magistrate Nidhi Gupta Vats announced on Wednesday evening that a preliminary investigation has substantiated the claims of fraudulent wage disbursement under MNREGA. As a result, orders have been issued to suspend the workers identified in the investigation, file a formal police report, and initiate departmental proceedings under the Panchayati Raj Act.

"The investigation conducted by local officials revealed that 18 individuals received MNREGA wages without engaging in any work. Those implicated include Mohammed Shami's sister Shabina, her husband Ghaznavi, her three brothers-in-law Aamir Suhail, Nasruddin, and Shekhu, as well as the children of village head Gule Ayesha," the District Magistrate stated.

The fraudulent entries were recorded in the MNREGA job cards in January 2021, and the individuals continued to receive wages in their bank accounts until August 2024-25 without having performed any labor, the official added.

The District Magistrate has also ordered the recovery of the misappropriated funds and the freezing of the Gram Pradhan's accounts.

This investigation was initiated following recent media reports regarding the fraud. Initial findings suggest the involvement of the then Village Development Officer, Assistant Programme Officer, operator, Gram Pradhan, and individuals associated with the Gram Pradhan. Further inquiries are ongoing.
