Mohammed Shami is set to return to international cricket for the first time since the conclusion of the 2023 World Cup final on November 19, 2023, when India competes against England in the opening T20I on Wednesday. To illustrate the duration of his absence, the 34-year-old has not participated in the entire 2023/25 World Test Championship cycle, with his last Test match being the 2023 WTC Final.

He expressed that his desire to represent the country fueled his perseverance during his time away from the game. "The passion to play for the country should never diminish. If you truly love it, you will continue to fight back, regardless of how many injuries you endure," Shami remarked at an event hosted by the Cricket Association of Bengal.

Shami further conveyed that he constantly feels he has not played enough for India. "I always think that no matter how many matches I play, it never feels sufficient. Because once I step away from cricket, I may not have the opportunity to return," he added.

'Whenever we get injured, our only thought is when can we return'

The fast bowler emphasized that individuals who have represented their state or nation would never consider abandoning the sport due to injury. "It is uncommon for players who don the colours of their state or country to contemplate leaving the game after sustaining an injury. Our primary concern when injured is to determine when we can make our comeback," Shami remarked.

Shami, who was unable to participate in significant events such as the T20 World Cup and the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test series, underscored that navigating injuries is an integral aspect of an athlete's career. "With dedication and perseverance, no injury can sideline you for an extended period. There will always be a path to return," he stated.
