Mohammed Shami's Long-Awaited Return to India's T20I Squad After 14 Months

Mumbai: Mohammed Shami, renowned for his precise seam bowling and consistent accuracy, is set to make his return to international cricket after a 14-month hiatus. The fast bowler has been selected for the upcoming five-match T20I series against England, commencing on January 22, which has sparked optimism that a sustained period free from injury could lead to his inclusion in the ICC Champions Trophy scheduled from February 19 to March 9.
Shami's comeback concludes a challenging period for the experienced pacer, who has faced multiple injuries followed by rehabilitation. His last appearance for India was on November 19, 2023, during the World Cup final in Ahmedabad, where he excelled, finishing as the tournament's leading wicket-taker with 24 wickets across seven matches.
At 34 years of age, Shami dealt with a persistent heel problem throughout the World Cup, and his rehabilitation was closely monitored as he received treatment involving injections in collaboration with the BCCI's medical staff. In February 2024, he underwent surgery on his right Achilles tendon, which resulted in his absence from the IPL.
The Indian cricket team notably felt Shami's absence during the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy series defeat in Australia. Although Jasprit Bumrah performed admirably, claiming 32 wickets, the team lacked adequate support and ultimately faced setbacks when Bumrah suffered back spasms during the fifth Test in Sydney. Following an extensive rehabilitation period, Shami participated in the Indian nets during the Bengaluru Test against New Zealand in October and was subsequently deemed fit to compete in the T20 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. It was at this point that Shami believed he was ready to don the Indian jersey again, although he had to await clearance from the BCCI's medical team.
"I recognize that he is actively participating in cricket back home, but there have been some concerns regarding his knee as well. Therefore, the last thing we want is for the player to arrive and then withdraw mid-game. We are not willing to take that risk. Unless we are absolutely certain, we will not proceed," stated India captain Rohit Sharma last month in Australia, emphasizing the importance of caution in player fitness.
