India greatly felt the absence of Mohammed Shami during the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and fans are hopeful that this will not be the case in the forthcoming Champions Trophy. Concurrently, it has been a challenging time for the pacer himself, who expressed the difficulty of not being able to participate in cricket and represent the Indian team.

"For a player, participating in matches is paramount. For me, the ball represents my existence. How can I find joy in that existence if I am unable to hold the ball? Life has become exceedingly challenging, that is all I can convey," Shami stated in an interview with Anandabazar Patrika.

In recent months, Shami has played for Bengal in various domestic cricket formats. His anticipated return to the Indian squad for the tour of Australia was hindered by swelling in his knee, which ultimately prevented him from joining the team. Consequently, they lost the series 3-1.

Shami has recently represented Bengal in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he achieved notable success by taking three wickets in a crucial knockout match against Haryana. He expressed, "I have always believed that if I were to return to play, I would do so with full commitment. My desire has always been to maintain integrity in the game and to be diligent in my efforts. Regardless of the challenges I faced, I have ensured that my dedication remains unwavering."

The 34-year-old cricketer stated that the sight of the Indian jersey served as his primary source of motivation throughout his rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. "What could be a greater incentive than representing one’s country? I have never required additional motivation. During my recovery at the National Academy in Bengaluru, the mere presence of the India jersey was sufficient to inspire me," he remarked.
