Mohammed Shami showcased his exceptional skills as the leader of India's pace attack on Thursday, guiding the team to a six-wicket victory over Bangladesh in their opening match of the 2025 Champions Trophy held in Dubai. The experienced bowler achieved impressive figures of 5/53 in his 10 overs, playing a crucial role in dismantling the Bangladeshi batting lineup, which was bowled out for 228 runs in 49.4 overs. Shami's spell included the dismissals of Soumya Sarkar (0), Mehidy Hasan Miraz (5), Jaker Ali (68), Tanzim Hasan Sakib (0), and Taskin Ahmed (3).

In addition to his remarkable performance, Shami captivated fans with a celebratory flying kiss after claiming his fifth wicket, Taskin Ahmed. During the post-match press conference, he revealed that this gesture was dedicated to his late father, who passed away in 2017. "That is for my father because he is my role model. He is always there for me," Shami expressed.

The seasoned pacer was also inquired about the support he received from Rohit Sharma throughout the tournament. Prior to the match, the Indian captain had publicly endorsed Shami, emphasizing the significance of his return to the national team.

In response to Rohit, he remarked, "It is crucial for every player to receive support, whether it comes from the captain or the coach. When preparing for a significant tournament, having players who place their trust in you provides reassurance for both the captain and the team. I consistently strive to perform at my best. The individual who provides guidance is in a position of authority, and their contributions are determined by fate. However, I endeavour to match that effort on my part. I continuously assess whether I am fulfilling the responsibilities and roles assigned to me. As you mentioned, I have participated in ICC events, yet I was unaware of the record you just referenced—may such achievements be a part of everyone's journey."

Pursuing a target of 229, India successfully reached 231/4 in 46.3 overs, with Shubman Gill delivering a match-winning performance, scoring an unbeaten century. The opener amassed 101 runs off 129 deliveries, including nine fours and two sixes, leading India to a six-wicket victory. Rohit and his team are set to face Pakistan in their next match on Sunday in Dubai. Shami is currently spearheading India's bowling attack in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah. Initially, his return to the Champions Trophy squad was uncertain, but his recent comeback has proven to be a significant advantage.
