India's fast bowler Mohammed Shami has faced criticism from Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi, the national president of the All India Muslim Jamaat, for consuming an energy drink during the semi-final match of the 2025 Champions Trophy against Australia, which coincided with the holy month of Ramadan.

During Ramadan, Muslims engage in fasting, known as roza, from dawn until dusk. This year, Ramadan commenced on the evening of February 28, according to the Islamic Hijri calendar. Razvi stated to ANI, "Fasting is one of the fundamental obligations of Islam. A healthy individual who neglects to observe roza commits a significant sin."

He further remarked, "Mohammed Shami, a well-known figure in Indian cricket, was seen drinking water or another beverage during the match. His participation in the game indicates his good health. In this context, he chose not to observe roza and even consumed water, which was witnessed by the entire world."

"This behavior conveys a misleading message to the public. By failing to observe roza, he has committed an offense. Such actions are unacceptable. According to Shariat, he is accountable for this transgression and will have to answer to God," Razvi concluded.

Shami's stellar show against Australia

Shami has claimed eight wickets so far in the Champions Trophy, positioning him as the second most effective bowler in the tournament, all while making a commendable return from an extended injury hiatus. The 34-year-old fast bowler was unable to participate in any international matches from November 2023 to January 2025.

He played a pivotal role in India's victory against Australia in the semi-final, achieving figures of 3/48 in his 10 overs. "I am striving to perform at my best. The captain always seeks wickets, but as a bowler, it is my duty to target the appropriate areas. Our team possesses ample experience, and the outcomes reflect that. In white-ball cricket, it is unnecessary to overanalyze the early stages. The true adjustments in skill are required after 30-35 overs, as the game's demands evolve," he remarked.
