Mohammad Rizwan Upset With PCB, Demands More Power or Hints at Exit: Report
6 days ago | 5 Views
Pakistan's captain, Mohammad Rizwan, has reportedly expressed "frustration" regarding the treatment he and Babar Azam received from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) following the team's disappointing performance in the Champions Trophy last week, where they exited in the group stage without securing a victory.
In the aftermath of this exit, the PCB selectors shifted their focus to the upcoming T20 World Cup next year. In an effort to adopt a more aggressive strategy, they opted to exclude traditional players Rizwan and Babar from the five-match T20I series in New Zealand, instead selecting a revamped team under the leadership of Salman Agha.
As reported by Telecom Asia Sport, sources indicated that Rizwan is dissatisfied with the PCB's handling of him and Babar post-Champions Trophy. The two players are expected to meet with PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi in the coming days to seek clarification regarding their selection for the T20I format. The report further noted that Rizwan is seeking greater authority as captain, threatening to resign if his demands are not met.
A PCB source stated, "Rizwan aims to have more influence over the selection of the playing eleven, and there is a possibility that he may resign from the ODI captaincy if he is not granted full authority."
The source also confirmed that Rizwan had a disagreement with Pakistan's interim head coach, Aaqib Javed, concerning selection issues. Rizwan advocated for the inclusion of five regular bowlers in the playing XI for the first two ODIs against New Zealand.
Foreign coaches in line to replace Aaqib Javed
The report also indicated that the PCB has informed Javed that several foreign coaches are being considered as his potential replacements. The former Pakistan fast bowler assumed the position of coach for the white-ball team in November of the previous year, with his tenure expected to last until the conclusion of the 2025 Champions Trophy.
Currently, the Pakistan players are participating in the ongoing Pakistan Super League, which is scheduled to run until May 18. Following this, Pakistan will welcome Bangladesh for a series of five T20 International matches.
