Mohammad Kaif Praises Indian Cricketer's Overlooked Efforts in Champions Trophy

Shreyas Iyer really made waves during India's amazing Champions Trophy victory, finishing as the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament. After being sidelined from the Test and T20I teams, he made a strong comeback to the ODI squad for the England series and the Champions Trophy, showcasing that he’s currently the top number 4 batter in the world. Iyer focused on his batting skills in domestic cricket, and since his return, he’s racked up seven scores of 40 or more in his last eight games. He played a crucial role in the Champions Trophy semifinal and final, helping India out of tough spots with scores of 45 and 48.
Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif was really impressed with Iyer's return and his ability to score consistently, especially after not playing Tests and T20Is for a while.
"I was taken aback by his performance. He’s not in the Test or T20I teams, just focusing on ODIs. So, you’re not in the mix regularly. You have to jump right back into international cricket after playing in the Ranji Trophy for Mumbai, and you need to be in an attacking mindset, hitting boundaries and playing your natural game," Kaif shared with Star Sports.
At 30 years old, Iyer was India’s top run-scorer in the Champions Trophy, amassing 243 runs across five matches. His crucial 48 runs in the final were key to India clinching another ICC title, especially after the team lost Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in quick succession.
Mohammad Kaif expressed his admiration for Shreyas Iyer, noting that a lot of players have come and gone
Kaif shared his respect for Iyer, highlighting how he stepped up to fill the number 4 spot that India had struggled to solidify for years. The ex-cricketer noted that Iyer played a crucial yet overlooked role in the tournament, finishing as the second-highest run-scorer without snagging a single Player of the Match award.
"I really respect this guy because we've seen so many players come and go at No. 4. It was tough to find the right fit there. But he came in, made it his own, and delivered some key performances. He ended up being the second-highest run-scorer of the tournament, yet he didn’t get a single Man of the Match award," the former Indian player remarked.
