Mitchell Starc unveils the backstory of Yashasvi Jaiswal's playful jab: "He laughed, and I..."

Mitchell Starc was unaware of Yashasvi Jaiswal's remark, "It's coming too slow," during Day 2 of the first Test between India and Australia at the Optus Stadium in Perth. As the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy approaches, which will be held as a day-night match at the Adelaide Oval, Starc expressed that he prefers to refrain from engaging in excessive verbal exchanges these days. He noted that his smile while returning to his mark after Jaiswal's comment stemmed from his lack of understanding of what the Indian opener had said.

"I didn't actually hear him say I bowled too slow. I tend to keep my comments to myself these days. I might have been more vocal in the past, but now I just focus on my game. He played that flick shot, and I believe I delivered a similar ball, which he defended. I inquired about the flick shot, and he chuckled. We left it at that," Starc shared with cricket.com.au.

This exchange occurred during India's second innings when Jaiswal, after hitting a boundary off Starc in the same over, defended a back-of-length delivery and remarked, “It's coming too slow.” The comment was captured by the stump microphone, and Starc was seen smiling as he walked back to his mark.

The context for Jaiswal's unexpected comment towards a senior player like Starc can be traced back to Australia's first innings. In the first session of Day 2, Starc had sledged India's debutant Harshit Rana after the right-arm pacer had targeted him with short-pitched deliveries. "I bowl faster than you, Harshit, and I have a long memory," Starc remarked to the Indian bowler, with whom he shared a dressing room at the Kolkata Knight Riders during IPL 2024.

Jaiswal's impressive score of 161 marked the highest by an Indian opener on Australian soil, enabling India to set a formidable target for Australia. The hosts fell significantly short of this target, suffering a record defeat by 295 runs.

Starc all praise for Jaiswal

Starc was all praise for Jaiswal, calling a fearless young cricket who is destined to play a lot of cricket for India.

"He'll play a lot of cricket for India and be highly successful. Certainly, he played really, really well in that second inning. He adapted to the conditions through that first Test. We got him cheaply in the first innings and he adapted to that and played a fantastic innings, so full credit to him. He is one of those new crop of fearless young cricketers around the world."
