16 days ago | 5 Views
Australia is currently missing their leading pace trio of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc for the Champions Trophy. Cummins and Hazlewood are sidelined due to injuries, while Starc's absence has been attributed to "personal reasons" by Cricket Australia. The experienced fast bowler has since clarified that his decision to withdraw was influenced by "some personal views" and an ankle issue that he experienced during the Test series against Sri Lanka.
"There are several factors involved, including some personal views, and I dealt with a bit of ankle pain throughout the Test series," Starc stated on the Willow Talk podcast. "I need to ensure that I recover properly, especially with the Test final approaching and a tour to the West Indies on the horizon. There is also some IPL cricket coming up, but my primary focus is on the Test final, so I aim to get my body in shape, play some cricket in the upcoming months, and be ready for the Test final."
The Champions Trophy is being held in Pakistan, although India is conducting their matches in Dubai. Additionally, one of the two semi-finals will take place in Dubai, with India being the only team confirmed to participate in that match. Should India advance, the final will also be held in Dubai. India has already secured a place in the semi-finals, while Starc's Australia is nearing confirmation of their own spot.
A busy season ahead for Starc
A busy season lies ahead for Starc. He is set to represent the Delhi Capitals in the 2025 season of the Indian Premier League, which commences on March 22. The Capitals' opening match is scheduled for March 24 against the Lucknow Super Giants, with their final group game against the Mumbai Indians on May 15. The IPL final is slated for May 25.
Following the IPL, Starc is expected to join the Australian team for the World Test Championship Final at Lord's, where they will face South Africa. As the defending champions, Australia aims to become the first team to win the title twice. Starc played a crucial role in their qualification, particularly during the five-match series against India, where he took 18 wickets.
