Mitchell Marsh Axed from Test XI as Beau Webster Set for Debut in Sydney

Australia has ultimately decided to part ways with Mitchell Marsh. The all-rounder has been omitted from the playing XI for the fifth and final Test match against India, which is set to commence on Friday at the Sydney Cricket Ground. As Australia's T20I captain, Marsh was expected to fulfill the role of the sole seam-bowling all-rounder in the lineup, particularly in the absence of the injured Cameron Green. However, he managed to accumulate only 73 runs across the first four Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and bowled infrequently as Australia sought to recover from a heavy defeat in the opening match in Perth.
Beau Webster will take Marsh's place in the Australian XI for the New Year's Test, as confirmed by captain Pat Cummins.
"Beau has been part of the squad for several Tests now, and Mitchy hasn't achieved the runs or wickets he would have hoped for, so we felt it was time for a change," Cummins stated to reporters at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
"It is unfortunate for Mitchy, as we recognize the value he brings to the team, but we believe this is an opportune moment for Beau to showcase his abilities.
"(Marsh) was included in the team this summer primarily as a top-six batter. When he is performing at his best, his batting alone secures his place in the side, with his bowling serving as an additional asset."
'Beau Webster a star performer': Pat Cummins
Webster, 31, has yet to represent his nation in any format; however, he has accumulated 5,297 runs and taken 148 wickets across 93 first-class matches, primarily for his state team, Tasmania.
"He's consistently been a standout performer for Tasmania, whether with the bat, ball, or in the field," remarked Cummins.
"He always seems to make a significant impact. He plays with a certain aggression and has the ability to change the course of a game, similar to what we have witnessed from Mitch Marsh, Travis Head, or Alex Carey in the middle order."
The only alteration to the team was the inclusion of Webster, while Mitchell Starc was retained despite experiencing a minor back issue during the fourth test.
"He simply grits his teeth and perseveres," Cummins stated regarding the left-arm fast bowler.
"He's the one player who never discusses the possibility of being rested or rotated. His sole desire is to take the field for Australia.
"He underwent a scan yesterday and received the all-clear to participate in this match. This is a crucial game in the context of the series and the World Test Championship, especially as it is a home match. He was determined not to miss this opportunity unless it was absolutely necessary."
A win in the fifth test would secure Australia’s position in this year's World Test Championship final against South Africa.
