Midnight Maestro: Dhoni’s Late-Night Grind Ahead of CSK vs MI

Sam Curran has returned to the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), donning the team's iconic yellow once again, which presents him with another chance to share the locker room with the legendary former captain of both India and CSK, MS Dhoni. The England all-rounder had previously played for CSK in 2020 and 2021 before moving to the Punjab Kings.
Curran is fully embracing his time with the Super Kings and, in a recent interview, disclosed that Dhoni has been engaging in late-night practice sessions to regain his explosive form ahead of the upcoming season. CSK is set to commence their campaign on March 23 against the Mumbai Indians.
“The other night, I was batting alongside MS and Jadeja (Ravindra Jadeja) at 11:30 PM. I found myself thinking, where else in the world would this happen? The lights were on, and we were just hitting balls everywhere,” Curran shared with Nasser Hussain on Sky Cricket.
“The local players gather around, simply watching MS. There’s an undeniable aura about him. He is incredibly approachable, and I believe his calm demeanor stems from the significant moments he has experienced. He never appears to lose his composure.”
The 25-year-old also commended Dhoni’s tranquillity, a characteristic that has been a hallmark of the former India captain’s illustrious career. Whether leading India to World Cup victories or guiding CSK to five IPL championships, Dhoni has consistently maintained his composure in high-pressure situations.
“I feel like he doesn’t display much emotion on his face,” Curran remarked.
“Even at the hotel, the players often mention how he keeps his room open, allowing them to come in to play FIFA with him and discuss cricket. He obviously can’t venture out much due to the overwhelming attention he receives.”
Despite Dhoni having passed the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad last season, his influence remains vital to the team.
The IPL is set to begin on Saturday, with the defending champions, Kolkata Knight Riders, opening the 2025 edition in a thrilling match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Kolkata. CSK will face the Mumbai Indians in the evening match on a double-header on Sunday.
