Indian captain Rohit Sharma's recent performance has raised some eyebrows in the Test arena. Since the home season kicked off in August, he’s been having a tough time, and things got even trickier during the tour in Australia, where he couldn’t even hit double digits in Adelaide. In Brisbane, he struggled again, moving down to the middle order to make room for the in-form KL Rahul at the top.
Michael Clarke, the former Australian captain, shared his thoughts on ESPN Australia, suggesting that Rohit seems a bit hesitant and hasn’t been playing with the aggressive flair that has defined his career. He even compared Rohit’s situation to that of Aaron Finch, who was also on the panel, noting that Finch faced similar challenges in Test cricket.
You don’t just choose players based on their recent performance. He’s the team captain, so I’m definitely going with him. Rohit hasn’t really found his groove yet; it took him a bit to get back into the swing of things. He’s eager to score runs, and he’s a fantastic player," Clarke said.
"He’s batting in the middle-order because he believes it’s what the team needs. I’m not planning to make any changes. KL Rahul is doing an awesome job at the top, and I get that. It doesn’t really matter what format he’s in; when he’s feeling confident and playing with that aggressive mindset, that’s when he shines the most.
Finch is a solid example. He’ll tell you that when you’re batting in Test cricket and the ball is swinging, it can be tough for someone who’s been a star in shorter formats when their confidence takes a hit.
“I’ve had chats with Finchy, and I’d prefer to see him go out there and back himself right from the first ball. It might not always look pretty, but that’s just how these guys roll. They’re game-changers, match-winners. Rohit is a key player for the Indian team.”
The series is set for an exhilarating conclusion.
The third Test wrapped up in a draw in Brisbane, setting the stage for a thrilling conclusion to the five-Test series as it heads to Melbourne for the legendary Boxing Day Test.
Right now, the series is tied at 1-1, and Rohit will be looking to shine with the bat when he steps back onto the field on December 26.
