Michael Clarke Sets a Condition for Rohit Sharma’s Selection in England Tests

Despite his inconsistent performance in the IPL 2025, Rohit Sharma is expected to travel to England. According to multiple reports, he is set to participate in the five-Test series. His position in the team was precarious following India's defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia; however, after leading India to victory in the Champions Trophy, the 38-year-old has been given a renewed opportunity. Although the series in England is nearly three months away and circumstances may change, the current strategy is to appoint Rohit as captain, with the aim of achieving India's first win there in 18 years.

Michael Clarke, the former captain of Australia’s World Cup-winning team, believes Rohit should remain a key figure in India's squad as their leader, but he has recommended a change in Rohit's batting position. Rohit's weaknesses as a Test opener were highlighted during the series in Australia, where he managed only 31 runs across three Tests. Consequently, Clarke suggests that Rohit would be more effective batting in the middle order, particularly at No. 5, where he could face the second new ball.

"I believe Rohit still possesses the necessary skills. Class is enduring, as demonstrated in the Champions Trophy final. He would be an excellent choice at No. 5, capable of handling the second new ball if required, and stabilizing the innings if early wickets fall. However, Rohit enjoys opening and can effectively counter the new ball as well. If I were an Indian selector, I would choose Rohit as the captain and leader for the England series," Clarke stated on the program 'Backstage with Boria'.

Recently, Rohit batted at No. 5 for India during the pink-ball Day/Night Test in Adelaide.

Rohit Sharma's record in England

Rohit's last tour of England in 2021 was relatively successful, as he accumulated 368 runs across four Test matches. He achieved his first overseas Test century with a score of 127 at the Oval and contributed 83 runs in a significant victory for India at Lord's. Additionally, he made a commendable 59 runs at Headingley, despite India losing that match. However, that period marked a different phase in Rohit's career; he was newly appointed as a Test opener, had not yet assumed the captaincy, and was four years younger. His current performance raises concerns.

Although the IPL 2025 season is still in its early stages, Rohit's scores of 0, 8, and 13 have raised red flags. Notably, he has only surpassed the 20-run mark twice in his last 10 IPL innings. The players will have nearly a month to prepare for the Test series against England after the IPL 2025 concludes on May 25, with the Test matches commencing on June 20 in Leeds.

India came close to achieving their first Test series victory in England since 2007, having drawn the series 2-2, with England winning the rescheduled fifth Test at Edgbaston the following year. Rohit also toured England in 2018 but managed only 34 runs in a single Test. As he approaches 40, if Rohit remains part of the BCCI's plans for the England series, it could potentially be his final Test series for India, and it is certain that the two-time ICC trophy-winning captain would aspire to conclude his career on a high note.
